Obituary
Lawrence Thurbide, 68
Sydney Mines
It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend, Lawrence Thurbide, on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Bras d’Or on July 14, 1953, he was the son of the late Arthur and Margaret (Ghetto) Thurbide.
In his earlier years, Lawrence sailed on the Great Lakes, then became a labourer with Local 1115 until his retirement.
In his younger years, he loved all his shenanigans, especially fishing and hunting with his nephews Darren, Joey and Burger. “Like the time he shot a deer in Scotch Lake, and it took off in the water. So, Dad swam out, put him in a headlock, and drug him back to shore”. He never left his catch behind.
He enjoyed many adventures and getting into trouble in Margaree with his friend Michael Pearo. “The Good Ole Boys”, especially the times at the fish hatchery.
Dad loved going for coffee, sitting in the church parking lot, listening to music at Indian Beach, night dances at the North Sydney Firehall with his brother/best friend Kevin. Oh, and we can’t forget about the year they lived it up, dining at different restaurants for breakfast, dinner and supper, trying new foods, drives, and just having fun together. Two peas in a pod.
Dad will always be remembered by his favourite sayings, “Hi Buddy” or “thank you Buddy.”
He was a kind and gentle soul, who put a smile on your face, and was loved by all who knew him.
He is survived by his daughter Tracey (Bert) Harris, Sydney Mines, son Lorne, Sydney Mines, and his two precious granddaughters Kelsey (David) and Olivia, who he loved beyond words. Also left to mourn are his brothers Steve (Colleen), Alder Point, Brian and Kevin, Sydney Mines, Donald (Bev) Cole Harbour, and Alex (Luzminda), Red Lake, Ontario, and sisters Barbara (Anthony) Digiobbi, South Haven, Bernice Gillis, Red Lake, Ontario, Carlie MacNeil, Northside Guest Home, Linda (Warren) Gillis, Millville, and his best friend Richard Finney. Dad had a special place in his heart for his niece Tanya Gillis, who he loved like a second daughter, as well as hundreds of nieces, nephews and cousins, whom he thought the world of.
He also leaves behind the mother of his children Moira Hines, Port Hawkesbury, and his daughter-in-law Ashley, Sydney Mines.
Besides his parents, Lawrence was predeceased by his companion Sharon MacIntyre, brothers Joe, Benny and Anthony, sister Agnes, sisters-in-law Ann Marie and Evelyn, and a very special nephew, Darren Thurbide.
We would like to thank Dr. Alexander Wawer, Brenda Hill, nurses on 5 East, especially Madison, Sarah, Cassandra, Courtney and Jordan for your care and compassion to our Dad during his brief illness.
Visitation for Lawrence will take place on Wednesday, March 2, 2022, from 2-3 pm in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will be held at a later date. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
