Lawrence “Larry” W. Matchett husband of Karen (Ryan) Matchett of Sillikers, NB, passed away Wednesday May 11, 2022 in the comfort of his own home at the age of 69.
Born in Newcastle NB, he was the son of Veronica (Mullin) Matchett and the late Daryl Matchett. He attended Little Southwest Baptist Church.
From a very young age, Larry was an incredibly hard worker, starting out working with his father in the woods. After completing Shipwright and Carpentry trades, he worked at the Halifax Dockyard as a Shipwright, refitting the Navy ships and submarines. Following this, he moved back home to Sillikers and worked as a carpenter at UPM until it closed.
He always had a passion for woodworking and was very creative – if you asked him to make something, the finished project would be better than what you imagined. He also loved building boats, and was never afraid to tackle anything, no matter how big. He was self-taught in many things, including making and repairing horse harness and equipment. Larry was always willing to help others with anything. If you called him with a question, he would not only help you out, but he would be there right away and teach you how to do it.
Larry loved animals and had many different kinds over the years, especially horses, which he enjoyed competing in shows and team cattle penning with his wife and friends. He always loved being outdoors – hunting, fishing, four-wheeling and motorcycling. Larry also enjoyed gardening, cooking, and travelling.
He was a great storyteller. Anytime you talked to Larry he would always share a good story and there would be lots of laughs. Those who knew him, learned much from him. He grew up with a large family and they have always been very close. Larry’s wife, kids, grandkids and entire family was his whole world, and he always put them first.
He will be greatly missed by his wife Karen, three daughters Rachel Matchett of Fredericton, Lacey Watling (Jeremy) of Quispamsis and Laura Wheaton (Michael) of Sillikers, his son Steven Matchett (Isabelle) of Loggieville, three sisters Judy McCormack of Miramichi, Karen Matchett-Bertin (Ron) of Fredericton and Carmel Duffy (Mike) of Napan, four brothers John Matchett (Barb) of Cavan ON, Michael Matchett (Mary) of Sillikers, Kevin Matchett (Tammy) of Halcomb and Paul Matchett of Nova Scotia, six grandchildren Brady, Jaena, Rigeena, Cullen, Chloe and Jaxon, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father and a nephew Derrick Singer.
Larry Matchett is resting at Little Southwest Baptist Church with visitation on Sunday May 15, from 2-4 PM & 6-8 PM. The Funeral service will be held Monday at 2 PM at the Little Southwest Baptist Church with Pastor Les Somers officiating. Burial will follow in the Church cemetery.
In memory of Larry, donations to Little Southwest Baptist Church or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
