Obituary
Lawrence was born in Provost and raised on their farm south of Provost. He was very proud to have the opportunity to go to both Vermilion and Olds Agricultural Colleges (1942) and enjoyed the many reunions of classmates over the years.
Lawrence married Avis Swanson in Camrose on June 30, 1945 in a double ring ceremony and they settled on the family farm. In 1950 they decided to relocate to Ponoka where they purchased the Cliff Vold farm near Morningside. The move took 2 days with Lawrence driving their Cockshutt 70 tractor and pulling a 2 wheeled wagon and a 4 wheeled wagon (old hay rack) loaded. Avis made many trips with their 1937 car pulling a wagon made from a Model T Ford car loaded with chickens, a pig, canning, and 3 year old Ken. The final trip was with a new baby Bruce in October and it was so cold the neighbours invited them to stay for a couple of days while they tried to warm the house.
Lawrence loved to wheel & deal and going to cattle auctions. When he and Avis were not travelling the world you could find him working on an antique tractor or working in his wood shop. May have enjoyed the stools and furniture he’s turned out – it is the “Landmark tradition”. Grandpa always made time to give a helping hand.
Lawrence is survived his son Ken (Linda); five grandchildren: Diana (Jay), Jackie (Greg), Tracy (Marty), Lee (Tara), and Chris (Sabine); eight great-grandchildren: Connor, Jackson, Kensey, Bryn (Cody), Jayce, Lauren, Emma, and Leeson; nieces and nephews Donna, Janet, Eric (Carol), Dean (Shelley), Dale, and Trudy – and their families; as well as many friends. He was predeceased by his wife Avis; son Bruce and daughter-in-law Barb; brothers Elmer (Betty) and Clarence; niece Greta; and nephews Rick, Raymond, and Ken.
A Celebration of Lawrence’s Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion in Ponoka at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 17, 2022.
