Obituary
Our loving mum passed away quietly in her sleep May 12, 2022. We said our goodbyes with wishes for her to be at peace and safe once again in Paul’s loving arms.
Predeceased by her loving husband Paul, infant son Reidar, sister Caroline Yahnke and brother Sigurd Smith, and son-in-law Andy Sears.
Left to mourn her are her daughters, Raelene (Tony) Bocale of White Rock, BC, Leanna (Brian) Cuddy of Sanford, MB, Patti-Lee Sears of Comox, BC and Sharilyn (David) Mushynsky of Regina, SK; grandchildren Leonardo, Jordan and Erik Bocale, Thomas Cuddy, Aidan and Barrett Sears, Benjamin, Caleb, Emma and Madelyn Mushynsky and great granddaughter Juniper Bocale, as well as several in-laws and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Born in Eastend SK July 23, 1931 Lavina grew up near Chelan SK. With the nearest highschool in Tisdale and no means to travel to and from school, she went to live with her Mother’s sister, Aunty Bertha. Upon completion of highschool in Tisdale Lavina ventured to Saskatoon for teacher training and attended Normal School as it was known then. (Fun fact: the term ‘normal’ was derived from France’s École normale supérieure of the 1790s, and implied that teaching methods would become the ‘norm’ for all schools within the jurisdiction.)
With her Teacher’s Certificate in hand Lavina boarded a train and got off in Craven, SK – the closest town to the Burnside School where she first taught. She was billeted with Anna and Walter Tarr who shared her Norwegian heritage. After getting to know Lavina, Ann knew she was the one for her younger brother Paul and arranged for the two to meet. Paul and Lavina were married July 12, 1956 and raised their four daughters on the original Thompson homestead in the district of Bulyea, SK.
Lavina was very engaged in the community and could be counted on to lend her helping hand at the church, the Whist Drives, the skating rink and the Scandinavian Dinners to name a few. She also enjoyed learning new skills by signing up for various community classes such as macrame, furniture upholstering and even line dancing. She did love to dance!
Lavina’s biggest love was working by Paul’s side on the mixed farm as they continually sought to improve and expand their farming operation. She was incredibly proud of what they had accomplished together during their lifetime. Theirs was truly a wonderful and loving partnership.
Special thanks to the staff of Arbor Oaks Manor and Cherished Hearts Personal Care homes for their dedication to mum’s care and comfort these last 6 years. Especially Sharon and Khriss who have been with her through all that time.
