Laurie Geddes, age 77 passed away peacefully at home in Victoria, BC on December 30th, with Susan, his beloved wife of 50 years, his son Jason, nephew Charles Fincham, and long-time friend and associate Larry Jefferson at his side. Laurie, the eldest son of Clinton and Shirley (Fleck) Geddes, was born in Truro, NS, and grew up in Middle Stewiacke. He was predeceased by his infant son Robert, his parents, his brothers Ross and Ronald, and infant sister Jane. He is survived by his family noted above in BC who were steadfast in his care during his illness, and by cherished grand daughter Nahlia Meyer of Victoria. Also, brother Conn (Kerry), sister Dianne, niece Lisa Geddes and family all in Nova Scotia, and nephew David (Delta) Botting and family in Ottawa all who grieve his passing; as do his long-time friends Larry Jefferson and Daniel Rigollet who took him cycling weekly up until late October, and visited him when that was no longer an option.
Laurie studied at College Militaire Royale in Saint-Jean, Quebec and Acadia University, Wolfville, NS in the 1960s. His career was multifaceted with both private industry and government, and took him from the east to west coasts and into the Arctic in Canada. In mid-career he founded Geddes and Associates, a human resources and management consulting firm in Victoria, BC and in the early 2000s came east and worked with The Hay Group in Halifax for a period of time. Laurie was a life-long athlete and excelled early in track and field and soccer. Throughout his life he was an avid jogger, taking part in a couple of marathons, and was also an enthusiastic tennis player.
Travel and exploring our lovely planet were lifelong passions of both Laurie and Susan. Their adventures took them to England, Greece, Ireland, Scotland, and many European countries. In 1999, they made a trip around the world, highlights of which were times spent in Portugal, Nepal, India, New Zealand and Australia. They had numerous trips to Mexico, and in later years especially enjoyed their winters in South America.
Laurie volunteered as a board member at the Hospice in Victoria in the early 1990s, and on returning to Victoria in 2012 he volunteered at the First Open Heart Society.
We thank Dr. L. Dewart, Dr. R. Pai, Dr. Sheikh, and the Palliative Care team in Victoria BC, for their kindness and care these past months. If desired, in memoriam donations can be made to a charity of choice.
Throughout his life, Laurie touched many lives with his special brand of kindness, generosity, humour, and intelligence. He was an honourable man who is cherished in our memories and will live forever in our hearts.
