Laurie Gilbert
After recently celebrating her 92nd birthday, Laurine (Laurie) Ruth Gilbert passed away on Thursday, October 13, 2022, suddenly, yet peacefully. Laurie was extremely young at heart and lived an active life right until the end playing golf on a regular basis at OslerBrook Golf and Country Club, bridge with her friends, walking in her neighbourhood, reading on her kindle, visits to her adored cottage Glencliff on the Severn River and her last golf game with her grandkids a week before her passing.
Laurie leaves behind her beloved husband of 66 years, Lloyd Gilbert. She was the devoted and loving mother to Paul (Brigitte Kopas), Julie and the late Peter (Martha Gilbert). Laurie cherished her grandchildren Jenny, Mary, Peter, Kristen and Robert. She will be deeply missed by her sister Carol Nunn, her nieces, and nephews, and all her loyal friends. She was predeceased by her parents Robert and Freda Addison, her brother Frank Addison and her son Peter.
Laurie grew up in Toronto and graduated University of Toronto, Class of 1952 with an Honours Degree in Sociology. In 1956 wanting a change of scenery, Laurie went off to Mont Tremblant to work and ski. This is where she met her best friend, lifelong teammate, and love of her life Lloyd. The two of them shared an incredible passion for snow skiing which was their common bond. When winter was over, they both would move on to being on the water. Laurie was an accomplished water skier who competed around the world, competing in two world championships, representing Canada as their national champion. Laurie loved the outdoors.
Lloyd’s career with Kodak had the Gilbert clan living in Rochester, NY; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Singapore and Hong Kong. In every new city, Laurie quickly got involved, she always volunteered within the community and found a local tennis group. Laurie always returned with the family in the summer to Glencliff. Upon Lloyd’s retirement, they returned to Canada and built their dream home at the bottom of Osler Bluff Ski and on the 5th hole of OslerBrook, which they filled with furniture and treasures from their time overseas. They continued to demonstrate their love for travelling around the world right into their late eighties.
Laurie’s love, friendship, vivacity, practical outlook and roll-with-it attitude will leave a void for the many she touched.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Laurie’s name can be directed to Hospice Georgian Triangle – Campbell House or Collingwood General Marine Hospital.
