Laura’s Obituary
Our Mother, Laura Georgina McMillan (nee Thompson) passed away on a warm and sunny August 12th, surrounded by many family members. Born May 30, 1931, in North Wallace, in her mother’s bed to Bernice and Morton Thompson.
Laura went to work at a young age, from a lighthouse to a funeral home, eventually moving on to an Ontario tobacco factory. Our parents started their life together in Stoney Creek upon their marriage.
Mom’s dream of having a real house occurred after we moved to West Tatamagouche in 1970.
Our Mothers strong resolve, her defence of those wronged, her love of people (especially children and elders), and her dawn to dusk work ethic were her defining strengths. Laura overcame her dread of nursing homes by working at the Willow Lodge, where she discovered a vibrant community instead of an institution.
Her few regrets included; not reaching 100 years of age (in competition with the Queen), retiring too young (65 years instead of 80 years), and not winning the lotto (a swimming pool for Tatamagouche).
Laura loved entertaining her family, baking, rug hooking, the lexicon, road trips, dancing, Dad, volunteering, being the boss, to do lists for her sons, working, shoes, big gardens, holding babies, legion events, walking, the radio and the T.V. blaring, a great bargain, family heirlooms, a cup of tea, gossip, big meals, her friends, Christmas club, Tops and talking on her strategically located phones around the house.
Mom is survived by her sons, Ronald (Patricia), David (Julia), and Fred (Sylvia), her grandchildren, Katrina (Daniel), Aaron (Kim), Benjamin (Melanie), Rachel (Sarah), Nicholas, Marina, Jillian. Great Grandchildren, Tristan, Kieran, Eilish, Clara, Bennett, Finley, Dashiell, and Gavin. Her siblings, Phyllis (Ken), Gerald (Colleen), and Lawson (Bessie).
Mom was predeceased by her husband George, parents; Bernice and Morton, brothers, Elmer, Jimmie, Gordon, and Ted, sister, Jean, sisters-in-law; Barb, Ruth, Gail, Eva: brother-in-law; Gillie, and lastly infant child Banford. To include her Thompson nieces and nephews would be in the thousands, but she remembered you all.
Mom and all of us were impressed and gladdened by the care and consideration of the Lillian Fraser Hospital staff to all of us.
A special thank you to Jeremy Saunders for getting the biggest smile out of Mom.
Visitation will be held Saturday, August 27th from 2-4 and 6-8pm in Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche. Funeral Service will be held Sunday, August 28th at 2pm in Bayhead Union Church with Rev. Connie McNamara officiating. Interment will take place in the Union Church Cemetery. Reception will follow in Royal Canadian Legion, Tatamagouche.
If so desired, donation’s may me made to the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital, RCL Branch #64, Tatamagouche or the Bayhead Hall. Online Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.mmcfunerals.com
