1937 – 2022
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of our beloved Laura at the age of 85 on Monday, December 5th, 2022 in Toronto after a brief illness. Daughter of George Gribble and Laura Trist of Sudbury, Ontario (Predeceased). Loving wife of Christopher Joseph Smith (Predeceased). Devoted mother to Valerie Scannura (nee Smith), Thomas Smith and Kevin Smith. Exceptionally loving grandmother to Anjelica Scannura, Keith Smith and Kerlyn Smith and mother in law to Roger Scannura and Lynn Smith. She is survived by her sister Valerie Muller (nee Gribble). Predeceased by her brother Thomas Gribble and Betty Pendleton (nee Gribble). Laura was born in Sudbury, Ontario and had was inspired to become a nurse which she fulfilled by graduating from the St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in 1957. Before she began her official nursing career she spent a carefree time in Portugal and she had fond memories of that trip before returning to Sudbury to start her work as a Nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She eventually established herself in her nursing career at the Sudbury Memorial Hospital and was hand-picked to train in the new Cardio Pulmonary Unit established at the hospital in the 1970’s. She excelled at her job and met many lifelong friends before retiring and moving to Toronto to be closer to her children. She subsequently spent 25 yrs. in Toronto where she enjoyed travelling with her granddaughter Anjelica overseas to Ireland, England and Scotland on many dancing trips. She loved family summer vacations in Port Elgin which gave us many happy memories. Her gregarious nature continued to lead her to enjoy watching various dance and comedy shows in Toronto, sewing costumes for her daughter’s dance company and lunching in the finest Toronto restaurants. Her playful personality eventually led her onto the stage with a stand- up comedy appearance! She was game for anything and was not one to shy away from an exciting venture while at the same time being the heart of the Smith and Scannura family. Her wit and dry humor endured to the end even though these past few years have seen her tirelessly take care of her husband Chris and the entire family. There is no doubt that we all will miss her dearly. There is no official gathering but memorial contributions can be made to the Toronto Grace Health Centre, www.torontograce.org 650 Church St., Toronto, ON M4Y 2G5 416 925-2251
