Kowalczuk, Kristjana – It is with heartfelt sorrow to announce the sudden passing of my dearest mom Kristjana (Kris) Kowalczuk on Thursday February 3, 2022 in Welland County General Hospital after a brief illness. She was in her 93rd year.
Kris was born April 1st, 1929 in Winnipegosis, Manitoba to parents John and Helga Stefanson. She was one of 7 children, 6 girls and a boy. As a young girl, she taught herself how to figure skate and enjoyed performing in the local winter carnivals. After high school, she enrolled in a hairdressing course in Saskatoon and later moved to Dauphin, Manitoba where she worked for a few years.
In 1958, Kris moved to Port Arthur (Thunder Bay) where she met and married John Kowalczuk in 1959. They have one daughter Lynda and two grandchildren. They resided in Thunder Bay for over 53 years and had many wonderful friends and fond memories living there. In 2012 they relocated to Welland, ON after John was stricken with dementia and to be closer to their daughter. Kris faithfully visited John on a daily basis in Rapelje Lodge LTC home where he resided.
Kris was a sweet, gentle, caring soul and the most loving person you could every know. Family meant everything to her. She had a beautiful smile and energy about her that touched the hearts of all who knew her. Kris loved living in Niagara and made many wonderful friends who thought the world of her and some even referred to her as “The Queen Mother.” Kris loved music and looked forward attending the weekly summer concerts in the park in Fonthill. She loved shopping with Lynda and taking day trips with her to Niagara-on- the- Lake (her favourite) and the quaint towns in the area. She also enjoyed watching the figure skating and curling championships. Her happy place was in the kitchen where she enjoyed baking and providing her family with delicious banana muffins on a weekly basis.
She was predeceased by her husband John of 58 years (March 2018) and all siblings.
Kris is lovingly survived by her daughter Lynda Binch (Bruce) of Fonthill, ON and grandchildren Adam and Sarah Sprovieri of Thunder Bay, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She will be sadly missed by her family and all who knew her.
Thank you to all of mom’s neighbours for watching out for her and to Elizabeth Watson for being there in mom’s final days.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will take place in May.
