Obituary
It is with deeply saddened hearts and hardship that we say goodbye to Kosta, our beloved son, brother, and nephew. Our guardian angel, Kosta, passed away unexpectedly on October 31, 2022, in Calgary Alberta.
Kosta was born on November 8, 1982, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He was the third of four brothers. Waiting for him in heaven is our father Nick; uncle Apostolos; grandfathers Kostas and Spiros; and grandmothers Helen and Adonia.
Growing up in Calgary and in Greece, Kosta loved to play sports outside with his three brothers, shooting hoops until dark and ignoring his mom’s calls for dinner so he could play a little longer. Kosta was a fun-loving kid, always the comic with his brothers and friends, he was the life of the party and always joking and making people laugh. A passionate family man, Kosta was very close with his family in Greece and in Canada and was always available for his family. He had a special relationship with his uncle Theofanis, they enjoyed many times together at cafes and eating gyros before and after dinner…and even an extra one for breakfast the next day!
As a child, Kosta was a gifted athlete, he showed a talent and passion for many sports at an early age, playing games such as division one soccer, hockey, and track and field. Beloved by his teammates and friends, Kosta was known for his kindness, generosity, and his big heart. After graduating high school in 1999, Kosta worked hard and established himself by working in Oil and Gas in Fort McMurray. Kosta was always striving to impress his Dad, Nick. When Kosta was in his early 20s and after working so hard, he saved enough money to purchase his first car, a Mazda MX-5, and Kosta took his dad for a ride. Kosta enjoyed living in Nafpaktos, Greece from 2014 until 2021 where he connected deeply to his Greek heritage. Cousins, uncles, grandmothers, neighbours, and friends all loved Kosta and Kosta gave them all unconditional love.
Always fashionable, Kosta had a special weakness for shoes, especially Nike Air Jordans. He would take special care to have at least two pairs of Air Jordans carefully preserved in the box and wrapped in plastic tucked away in his closet. Kosta was never conservative with his look, he stayed on point with the latest hair trends from the 90’s mushroom cut, to long and curly, a buzz cut, and even a long ponytail, and Kosta always looked great. He always took pride in his appearance and being trendy with his scarves and skinny jeans and he naturally pulled it off. Kosta would dry clean all of his nice clothes without even wearing them once; and some may say dry-cleaning was an obsession, but Kosta was always diligent in taking care of the things he had. Those closest to him couldn’t forget his favourite mini pocket calculator he always had with him in the early 2000’s.
Kosta had the natural ability of helping and being of service to others. In 2012, he made the trip down to St. Anthony’s Monastery in Phoenix, Arizona, and stayed there for six months, and a second trip back in 2014 for another six months. Kosta met so many wonderful friends at the Monastery and became close with Elder Ephraim. At the Monastery, Kosta embraced the teachings and he learned how to share his gift of helping with everyone around him.
Kosta was a big dreamer with a generous spirit, he never hesitated to support his loved ones, friends, and family. He had a big heart and would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. Kosta was a strong man from the inside and out. He was protective of the people he loved and was a ‘secret watch dog’ always looking out for everyone. He had a strong exterior shell but was soft and beautiful on the inside, nobody could resist his contagious laugh, affection, kindness, and his unconditional love. Kosta came into this world to show everyone that the most important thing is to be able to care and love.
Kosta is survived by his mother Alexandra; his brothers Louie, Spiros, and John; and his uncle Theofanis. He is also survived by his extended family in Greece Kosta (Papadopoulos), Sofia (Papadopoulos), Nikos (Papadopoulos), Christos (Papadopoulos), Lambros (Makos), Dymos (Makos), Dimitrios (Makos), Elizabeth (Makos), Bill (Makos), Lynn (Makos), Dimitrios (Papageorgios), Maria (Papageorgios), John (Papageorgios) and their respective families.
For those who wish, donations can be made in Kosta’s memory to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, in remembrance of his proud accomplishments, achievements, personification of strength, and his legacy.
