Obituary
With heavy hearts, but with appreciation of a long life well-lived, we announce the death Kay Ruthven on May 19th at the Upper River Valley Hospital. Kay was born July 2nd 1935 at Tracy New Brunswick Daughter to the late Harry and Anna (McLeary) Maynard.
Upon graduation Kay moved to Ontario and worked in a law office for a few years and then moved to the insurance industry. Kay then moved on to become the Executive Assistant to the York Region Chief of Police for 18 years. After retiring from the police force and travelling with her husband Earl, Kay could not sit idle and started a new career as a court stenographer,
; eventually operating a stenography business out of her house.
After her beloved Husband Earl’s death 1999, Kay made the decision to relocate to Woodstock to be close to her sister Lavina Keenan and mother Anna. Kay continued as a court stenographer until her breast cancer diagnosis, which she fought and won. Never one to sit quietly, Kay organized the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life for a number of years , leaving an indelible mark on the community as a champion and trailblazer of volunteering. Kay’s countless volunteer efforts were recognized by the Canadian Cancer Society by being awarded the Medal of Courage. In 2013 Kay was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for her countless hours of volunteer work.
Kay was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Kay will be sadly missed by her Nephews, Peter, Paul and David Keenan, Niece Elizabeth Wilson, Cousin JoAnn Lord, friends Melody Hannah, Linda Markey, Diane Lenehan, Kevin McKellar & Lester Wood.
At Kay’s request there will be no funeral service. Cremation has taken place with interment beside her beloved Earl in Newmarket Ontario in June.
