Obituary of Katherine (Kay) Bateman
A resident of Highgate, Katherine (Kay) Bateman passed away at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital on Friday February 11, 2022, in her 81st year.
Born in Moncton and raised in Minto New Brunswick, Kay was the 3rd of 5 children born to the late Robert John and M. Elizabeth (Edgett) Fanjoy. Kay graduated from the nursing program at Victoria General Hospital in Halifax in 1963. She nursed in Halifax, Oakville, Toronto and Edmonton before retiring from the Southwest Regional Centre. She kept in touch with many of her classmates over the years and thoroughly enjoyed their class reunions.
She married Bill Bateman in 1968 in Edmonton and they started their family on the farm in Thorsby Alberta before moving to the farm near Palmyra in Kent County in 1976.
Beloved wife of the late Bill Bateman (2002).
Loving mother to Tom (Margaret) Bateman, Allyson (John) Piper, and Sandra (Dave) Lannin.
Very proud Gram to Corine, Laura, Jeanette Bateman, and Declan Lannin. They were her pride and joy.
Survived by sisters Margaret Fanjoy, Marjorie Fanjoy, brother Al (Judy) Fanjoy and family, and brother-in-law Moe (Susan) Pauderis. Also survived by nieces and nephews Noel (Kathy; Anderson, Audrey) Bateman, Mark Pauderis, Mary Ann (Eric; Sophie, Layla) Lamontagne. Mom was close with Sandra’s in-laws and was grateful for their support and company over the years. Darwin and Erma Lannin, Michelle (Steve; Brody, Eric) Warne.
Predeceased by her sister Marion (Fanjoy) Pauderis, her brother-in-law David Bateman, and Bill and David’s parents, Jim and Vira (Sutherland) Bateman.
She was a special lady who had a kind word and smile for everyone she encountered. She enjoyed her vegetable garden, flower gardens, crocheting, Hockey Night in Canada, watching tennis, and a friendly visit over a cup of coffee. She toured many countries during her retirement years including Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Chile, Malta, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Iceland, the British Isles, Russia, and Portugal (the Azores).
A very special thank you to the nurses, PSW’s and doctors of the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital, 4th Floor for their exceptional care of Mom. You made her feel comfortable and safe. She enjoyed getting to know you and the stories you shared with her. You are truly angels in gowns and your compassion will never be forgotten.
As per Kay’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Interment to take place at Young’s Cove, New Brunswick at a later date.
Donations made in memory of Kay to the Canadian Cancer Society, the War Amps, or the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.

“As a nurse, we have the opportunity to heal the heart, mind, soul and body of our patients, their families and ourselves. They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel.”
