Obituary For Karl Karl Redekopp
Karl K. Redekopp, resident of Silver Valley, AB, beloved husband of Anne Redekopp, passed away on Thursday, March 3, 2022, in Grande Prairie, AB, at the age of 92 years.
Karl was born April 17, 1929, in Mellowdale, AB, to Karl and Margaret (Peters) Redekop. The family moved to Coaldale, AB, in 1931. In 1937, they moved to Vauxhall, AB, where they bought their farm.
School was definitely not Karl’s priority as a boy. He always found new ventures to explore; stamp collecting, photography, beekeeping, trapping (skunks, porcupines, etc). Karl met Anne, the love of his life and they were united as one on November 12, 1950, (they celebrated 71 years of marriage). Their first daughter, Zola, was born a year later in Taber, AB. Karl had an adventurous nature, so he and Anne quickly saved enough money to buy a new car and decided to move their young family east to St. Catharines, ON. Karl discovered carpentry, borrowed to build his first home in Niagara-on-the-Lake, paid it off promptly, continued to provide for his family with his newfound skill building homes. During that time, Glen, Jane and Karen were born. In 1959, the family headed back west and settled in Coaldale. Karl continued with carpentry, carrying on a thriving business for some years. While still in Coaldale, the youngest child, Lisa completed the family.
In 1972, Karl decided he wanted a simpler lifestyle and Anne was his unwavering support. They went on a trip up north to Silver Valley and settled on a ¼ section of bush land close to the mighty Peace River. Karl built a simple home, embraced country living, complete with solar power, building a large dam with a gravity feed water supply. He semi-retired, continuing to build homes occasionally, as well as some basement work. They became actively involved in the community and built beautiful relationships with Anne’s large family.
Karl was an avid hunter, enjoyed fishing trips to Winagami Lake, ice fishing, Savanna Fair and horseshoe competitions, and wild berry picking. Karl was a whiz on skates, he enjoyed cross-country skiing, wild jaunts down the harrowing old Silver Valley road to the Peace River. He was quiet, yet ambitious. He was always inventing equipment for work. Karl loved to build recreational items; crossbows, boats, “cartoppers”, games, furniture pieces, and much more. Their home was always open to all. Karl’s kids and grandchildren all were completely secure and loved at the farm and they had countless adventures on Karl and Anne’s beautiful property. Karl and Anne loved Arizona. They drove down every winter for 40 plus years. They discovered desert golfing, and huge Quartzsite flea markets. Their travels took them to Europe, Papua New Guinea, Mexico, Florida, the Baja, and all across Canada. Karl enjoyed and loved his wife and children.
Karl is survived by his children: Glen (Shelley), Jane (Dan), Karen (Bob), Lisa, and son in-law Ron; grandchildren: Jennifer, Maurissa (Eric), Kristen, Evan (Kristen), Regan, Adam (Melissa), Angela (Wade), Alison (Dale), Ross (Keri), and Alexandria; he was a dear great-grandfather to: Xavier, Erik, Mathijs, Jasper, Avory, Jack, Benjamin, Parker, Alyssa, Rory, Samantha, Wesley, Wellington, Levi, Amelia, and Cooper; as well as his eldest brother Edward.
Karl was predeceased by his parents Karl and Margaretha Redekop; his brother Henry Redekop; infant sister Selma; as well as his beloved daughter Zola Anne.
We are so honored and abundantly blessed to have been loved so well.
A Private Family Gathering was held March 10, 2022, at Oliver’s Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Karl’s Life will be held at a later date in June, at the Family Home in Silver Valley, AB, for all Family and Friends.
