KURYS, Jurij Georgius Ph.D, FCIC, P.Eng
(May 3, 1925 – October 10, 2022) –
Suddenly after a brief illness in his 98th year, surrounded by his family. Predeceased by his parents Maria and Mykola. Survived by his wife of 59 years, Irene, his children Oksana Rozanec (Peter), Natalie Kos (Andrew), Christine Obbema (Richard), and his grandchildren Alexander and Steven Rozanec, Andrew and Christine Kos, Rachel, Garrett and Isabel Obbema. Born in Cerkivna, Western Ukraine, in 1925. Was relocated by the Germans for forced labour at the tender age of 16 to Leer in Northern Germany near the Dutch border. Remained in Germany after the war until 1952, during which time he served as a translator to Field Marshall Montgomery in the British Army of the Occupied Rhine. Emigrated to Canada in 1952. Graduated Chemical Engineering from The University of Toronto in 1960, and then completed his Ph.D in Toxicology at the Ukrainian Free University in Munich, Germany in 1972. Married the love of his life, Irene Martyniuk, on May 11, 1963. Worked in various portfolios with the Government of Ontario until his retirement in 1990. After his retirement, worked as a Notary Public and translator until 6 weeks before his passing. Jurij was fiercely proud to be Canadian and equally committed to his homeland, Ukraine. He served as President for many Canadian – Ukrainian organizations. Above all, he treasured his family.
