Obituary
Mrs. Julia Nagy of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Mr. Joe Nagy, passed away at Adaptacare in Lethbridge on Sunday, October 16, 2022 at the age of 96 years.
Julia was born Joe and Barbara Toth, in Martonyi, Hungary in 1925. Along with her mother Barbara and younger brother Joe she immigrated to Canada at the age of 10. They travelled by Steamer Ship for 3 weeks in very bad weather, then, landing in Halifax with ten dollars, one trunk and one suitcase their new lives began. After riding the train across Canada, they joined her father Joe Toth on the family farm southwest of Milk River in the area known as “1-17”, composed mostly of Hungarian families.
She loved going to school and attended a small country school “John Joe’s”. English came easily to her and she was able to skip a couple of grades.
During her time on the farm, her mother taught her cooking and baking skills at a very early age and Julia would frequently be in charge of feeding the hired crew while her mother was doing the same on another farm helping with income. Julia learned much from her mother and would go on to teach cooking and baking to her daughters and bring joy to many people.
On December 10, 1925, she married Joe Nagy and together they moved to the Nagy farm north of Milk River. Together they raised four girls Elizabeth, Linda, Velma, and Gladys. Julia loved to work in her massive vegetable and fruit garden then canning and freezing the harvest to provide for the family during the winter. She mastered the sewing machine and created most of the clothes for herself and her daughters. Extra time was filled with Knitting and crochet. Like many farm women in those days, she worked side by side with her husband Joe, in the fields, doing the many farm chores or driving grain truck.
Julia was a life member of the United Church Women and the Order of the Royal Purple. Her baking was a welcome addition to Church suppers and weddings. Joe and Julia believed in friends and helping each other in times of need. They truly valued their times with the farm neighbors and friends, frequently hosting card parties.
In 1966 they sold the family farm and moved to Lethbridge. Julia was able to continue with her garden and flowers. Once off the farm, Joe and Julia were able to nurture a love of travel. Julia had a very special love of the mountains. Here she believed she was closest to nature and God. One of their greatest loves was the camping trips with family.
Julia loved her family unconditionally and was ready with a listening ear or time for a chat. Her goal in life was to be the best mother, grandmother and great-grandmother that she could be. Her loving personality and desire to be with family continued with her until her passing.
Julia truly cared about people. Always willing to help with a moment’s notice. In all of her years, she never had a harsh word to say about anyone.
Julia was predeceased by her husband Joe; parents Barbara and Joe Toth; younger brother Joseph; great grandson Logan Boulet and later in life, her companion George Rogers.
Julia is survived by her daughters Liz (Doug) Higo, Linda (Pete) Kish, Velma (George) Sherring and Gladys (Brent) Payne; grandchildren Bernie (Toby) Boulet, Kevin (Nancy) Higo, Trevor (Anne) Kish, Cary Kish, Anthony (Nikki) Kish, Jackie (Nick) Schrage, BJ Sherring, Sheighla (Clayton) McClung, Julie (James) Kindt, Garrett (Corrine) Payne, Kaila (Aaron) Ulch and 30 Great grandchildren.
