Joyce Marion Walters
1934-2022

Joyce Marion Walters, 87, of
Hillsborough, passed away peacefully on May 30th, 2022 with her family
by her side.

Joyce was born in Hillsborough, NB on
July 22, 1934, the daughter of the late Oscar and Irene (McCoubrey)
Milton.

In her early years, Joyce worked for
Eaton’s in Moncton transferring to Toronto soon after
opening the door to many work and personal adventures alongside her
friends; Mary, Beryl, and Vera. Shortly thereafter she met the love of
her life, Herb, and they married in 1960. Together they raised four
children, who were their world. She decided to be a stay at home mum
and her family.

Joyce took great pride in caring for
Herb and the kids, making sure that they always had everything they
needed and more. She would make her famous one-by-ones and cocoa with
hot milk in the morning before school.

In the mid-70s, they moved their
family to Hillsborough. As the children grew up, graduated, and
married, Joyce then spent her time focused on her husband
Herb.

Before long, the grandchildren began
to come along. There was no better Grammy in the world than Grammy
Walters and nothing made her happier than visits with her grandkids.
When the great-grandchildren were born, her heart grew even more, if
that was even possible. Joyce’s language of love was sweets.
She made sure all the kids knew they could walk through her door and
head to the cupboard to find cookies, or to the fridge to find
chocolate, and you were sure to always find potato chips in the
freezer.

Joyce was never seen without high
heels, clip on earrings, and her long, polished nails. She
wasn’t quite 5’ tall, though she would argue
otherwise. As the grandchildren grew, “Grammy” quickly
became the family measuring stick, with every grandchild and
great-grandchild excitedly standing next to her in the kitchen every
time they visited, just waiting for the day when they could proclaim
“I’m taller than Grammy!”.

She loved yard sales and rarely missed
a Saturday morning out with her sister and her friends, searching for
good deal. Her entertainment of choice was a good Errol Flynn movie
and a Globe magazine. She hated the colour green, anything with birds
or butterflies printed on it, and of course any type of bug. She kept
a single shoe in every room of the house, just in case a bug was
spotted and she needed a weapon to defend herself. Dirt was her enemy
and her dust buster was her best friend, usually coming out when
someone was trying to watch tv as she vacuumed around
them.

Grammy’s kitchen was the
family gathering place. She loved to cook for everyone, always
seasoning everything liberally with salt, which made her turkey
dinners second to none. Hanging out in the kitchen while she cooked is
a memory everyone will cherish.

She will be deeply missed by her son,
Herbert Walters (Ann) of Lower Coverdale, her daughters, Brenda Smith
(George) of Hillsborough, Carolin Cochrane (Norman) of Mont Eagle, and
Deborah Woodworth (Wayne) of Grand Bay; her grandchildren, Megan
(Shawn), Marley (Nathan), Ryan (Anna), Jessica, Alexandra (Nick),
Carlee, and Courtney (Ally); her great-grandchildren, Ella, Lily,
Owen, and Avery. Along with her brother-in-law, Dwaine Killen and
several nieces and nephews.

Beside her parents, Oscar and Irene
(McCoubrey) Milton, she was predeceased by her husband, Herbert
Walters; her sister, Doris Killen; and her brother, Raymond
Milton.

To honour Joyce’s wishes, no
funeral service or visitation will be held. Her family will celebrate
her life in a private gathering.

In lieu of flowers, donations to
Hospice SENB would be appreciated. Joyce’s family is forever
grateful for the care and love she was shown there in her last
days.
