Joyce Evelyn George 2022

On Feb. 28, 2022, in her 101st year, Joyce Evelyn George passed away at Royal Oak Long Term Residence, Kingsville, her home for the past 11 years. Beloved wife of the late David (1988). Dear mother of Mary Turner and Joan George. Dear mother-in-law of Jerry Brown. Joyce was born in Sydenham, England, eldest child of Charles and Mabel Ashman. Predeceased by sister Olive Browning (South Africa) and brother Charles Ashman (England).
Joyce and David were married in wartime England. While David went overseas with the RAF, she “did her bit” being a fire warden on the home front. Later they immigrated to Canada, settling in Windsor to raise their two daughters. Joyce was skilled in the art of home-making, accomplished in sewing and needlework. She enjoyed the outdoors and gardened alongside Spring Garden Road neighbours for over 5 decades. She was a keen swimmer and loved holidays by the water. Joyce was a faithful member of St. Luke’s, St. Philip’s and St. Mark’s (Anglican) churches during her lifetime. Joyce left school at 14 but was a great correspondent, and for years fired off weekly airletters to mother and siblings residing on other continents, maintaining the family ties. In later years as circumstances allowed, holidays were spent travelling across oceans to visit relatives. She will be missed by family and friends in England and South Africa, as well as her local friends.
Joyce was a proud Canadian, a lifelong learner, having keen interest in current events, listening to CBC radio, and astounding her family with her knowledge of the world. She had health challenges which she met head on with determination and grace. Lack of vision did not deter her from enjoying Books on CD. If so desired, donations to Accessibility Office, Windsor Public Library, would be welcomed in Joyce’s memory.
Joyce’s family is grateful for the kindness, care and compassion she received from everyone at Royal Oak. Cremation services are entrusted to Families First, 3260 Dougall Ave. South Windsor (519-969-5841). A private family gathering will be held.
