Obituary
Joyce Brown
1935 ~ 2022
On Wednesday August 17, 2022, Joyce (nee Lewis) Brown, loving wife and mother passed away at the age of 86. After a long battle with Cancer, Joyce quietly passed away. She was surrounded with love the entire day.
Born November 26, 1935 in Glace Bay, NS to Worrall and Emma (nee Mackenzie) Lewis. Raised on Sydney Rd in Reserve Mines, NS, Joyce lived in the same house that her father was born in. During those years her home housed her paternal grandparents, parents, her brother, her cousin, her paternal aunt (and later aunt’s husband.) Joyce attended and graduated from Morrison H.S. After graduation Joyce worked at Glace Bay General Hospital and then Sydney Steel. In 1959 a move to Ottawa where she found employment on Parliament Hill in the office of Egan Chambers who was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defense. During this time Joyce resided at Laurentian Terrace on Sus St., a residence the Government built for female civil servants in 1943. It was at this residence on February 14, 1960 (Valentine’s Day) a young 24-year-old Donald Brown arrived and picked Joyce up on a blind date. Joyce and Don had found the loves of their lives and were married the next year on August 19, 1961 in Reserve Mines, NS. After their wedding and honeymoon, they moved back to Ottawa and began their lives as husband and wife. In November of 1967 they moved into a new housing development in Glen Cairn (later amalgamated with Kanata, then Ottawa) on Country Lane. This is where Joyce and Don raised their family and lived the rest of their lives.
Joyce leaves behind her husband, Donald (Don) Brown, three sons, Andrew Brown, Joel Brown and Derek Brown, foster daughter Patricia McGuiness, daughter in law Shelley McKinnon, her two granddaughters Emma and Olivia Brown and her brother Adam Lewis. So also leaves behind her siblings-in-law; Deanna (nee Brown) and William (Bill) Ferguson, David Brown and Lois Lewis. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents Worrall and Emma Lewis, her mother, Mother and Father-in law Leonard and Elizabeth (aka Lib) Brown, Sister/Cousin Joan (Buddy) Sharpe, Aunt Avice (Donald) Matheson and sister-in law Judy Brown.
Joyce bravely battled Cancer several times throughout her life, starting in 1961 with Hodgkin Lymphoma, Breast Cancer in 2002, a return of Breast Cancer in 2010 and this last battle Liver Cancer diagnosed in 2014. In 2014 our family wasn’t given good news on Joyce’s survival expectations, but then she was placed in a program for a trial medication that gave Joyce a new lease on life. Joyce would volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society by driving patients to and from their appointments. To honor Joyce Brown, the family kindly asks that in lieu of flowers, please donate to the Canadian Cancer Society in her name. Donations can be made through this link:
