Joyce’s Obituary
It is with deep and heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Mum, Joyce Lovegrove, 90, who died peacefully at Queen’s Garden Long Term Care Facility in Hamilton, Ontario on Tuesday, October 25, 2022. Born in London, England, Mum was the daughter of the late Herbert and Elizabeth Thomas.
Mum will be dearly missed by her son Paul, wife Rita, of Scarborough and son Robert, wife Janet, of Paris; her grandchildren, Jason, Michael, Julia, Terry and Elizabeth; great grandchildren, Alexsandra and Tony Jr.; as well as her many nieces and nephews living in Canada, US, and UK. Mum was pre-deceased by her husband, Edward (Ted) William Lovegrove; her sisters Win Thomas, Eva Hadlow, Gwen Gordon, and brother, Don Thomas.
Mum was a loving, giving, strong, and caring person no matter what the world sent her way. An example of this was how she arrived in Canada in 1956, with two small children in tow, and through the generosity of the Red Cross Society. News via telegram had just arrived that our dad (Edward/Ted) was not going to survive after being involved in a house fire. Fortunately, Dad survived. He and Mum worked hard and enjoyed their new life together in Canada. Events such as these contributed to further strengthening Mum’s indelible work ethic and her tenacious spirit.
Mum was a bright light with a quiet and gentle presence that touched everyone she met. She always had a smile for you—and a cup of tea. She did not have to say much as her facial expressions would tell all, especially when she rolled her eyes. She was always glad to see you and would happily put together meals in an instant like a short order cook or she would host large family dinners as a way of keeping everyone connected. Mum made the best roasted potatoes and Yorkshire pudding this side of the pond. You never left her house hungry or without special home-baked treats. She also loved time spent in nature or being outside and working in her garden or reading the newspaper on her porch. She adored her family the most; then her cats!
A special thank you to the exceptional staff at Queen’s Garden Long Term Care Facility for the wonderful care and compassion our Mum received. It was outstanding and very much appreciated.
Friends will received at the DWAYNE D. BUDGELL Funeral Home on Saturday November 19, 2022 for a Memorial Reception from 2 – 4 p.m. At 4 p.m., Rev. Adrianne Robertson will close the reception by sharing words of comfort and prayer. Our Mum lived with mixed dementia (vascular/Alzheimer’s disease) in her final years. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Brant, Haldimand Norfolk, Hamilton Halton (www.alzda.ca) in our mother’s memory.
“Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped into the next room. I am I, and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, that we still are. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference in your tone, wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was, let it be spoken without effort, without the trace of a shadow on it. Life means all that is ever meant. It is the same as it ever was; there is unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you, an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner.
All is well.”
