Joseph Mailman 1949 2022

Joseph (Joe) Keith Mailman
Joseph Keith Mailman passed away peacefully on June 10, 2022
at South Shore Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit, Bridgewater,
Nova Scotia. Born in Enfield, Nova Scotia on December 30, 1949 to
Richard Silas Mailman and Clara Angus (Reynolds) Mailman and he was a
member of the Sipekne’katik Band of Indian Brook First
Nations.
He was the last of five children that were born into this
family. He was predeceased by brothers Lester, Ralph and sisters Marie
and Virginia. He is survived by his wife Jean of 52 years and their
fur companions, their dog Shiann and Daisy their cat. Joe has a total
of 5 dogs in his lifetime, Brandy, an Irish Setter, Cagney, a Golden
Retriever, Maggie Mae, a Golden Retriever and Shiann, a Golden
Retriever, and he loved each one the same as the other. He has many,
many nieces and nephews surviving as well, too numerous to
mention.
Joe left Enfield, Nova Scotia at the age of 16 and made his
trip to the big city of Toronto and met the love of his life and wife
to be. He picked up a job at an Optical business at that time, called
Imperial Optical, being the “go for” guy. That business was
purchased by R&R Optical in Scarborough and he continued to
work for them in an office owned by R&R Optical in Toronto
until the time of his retirement and had earned to title of Optical
Lab Manager. He loved his job by home was calling out to him in Nova
Scotia. He had lots of family on the South Shore of Nova Scotia and
that is where he decided to put permanent roots down.
Twelve years before he and his wife moved to Nova Scotia
permanently, they drove home every Summer with their dog and spent 3
or 4 weeks at his uncle’s cottage on Shingle Lake. Joe then
decided he liked this area and the lake so much he would love to buy a
lot on the lake and when he and Jean moved home permanently they would
build their house on this lot. Well, the dream came true. Joe and Jean
built their home in 2010 and lived at their home on Shingle Lake for a
total of 12 years. Joe’s health took a turn for the worse
the last 2 years of his life and he didn’t get to enjoy his
home on the lake as much as he should have.
Joe was an avid hunter and fisherman. He and Jean had a
property on Bonnie Lake in BraceBridge, Ontario. They spent weekends
and part of the Summer at this property enjoying what he loved so
much, fishing and enjoying life.
After moving to Nova Scotia on Shingle Lake, Joe bought
himself four wheeler and a farm tractor to do the chores that needed
to be done at his new home, yard maintenance, hauling his dock out of
the water in the Fall, hauling firewood around and placing it in areas
where he could get to it for burning throughout the Winter. He enjoyed
being outdoors as much as he could. He and Jean worked hard to make
their property a home.
Joe was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 24,
Bridgewater Division.
Heartfelt thanks to the staff on the Palliative Care Unit of
the South Shore Regional Hospital and Doctors and Nurses for the care
that Joe received there. Also, many thanks to all the family and
friends that helped support Joe and I while he was ill over the last 2
years. Special thanks to Joe’s nephew Larry (Kenley) and
Larry’s grandson, Sandy and to Wes (Diane), his other nephew
for all the special help to both of us over all the years of our
lives.
We lived, we loved,
Through thick and thin with
our 5 dogs and each other,
We took care of each other
through it all
And I will miss my partner of 52
years,
He will be sadly, sadly, missed by
me.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of
the R.A. Corkum Funeral Home, Wileville. Cremation has taken place as
Joe had wanted and Interment will be announced at a later date. No
flowers by request.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Joseph Mailman 1949 2022..
