Joseph Joe Lloyd Southern Monday January 24th 2022

Joseph Lloyd Southern
The family of the late Joseph (Joe) Southern age 71 of Lower Wedgeport, N.S. wish to announce his passing in the early morning of January 24, 2022. Born in Port Maitland, he was the only son of wonderful parents Keith and Jessie (Cann) Southern. He is survived by his wife, Sharon (Le Blanc) Southern and his two sons Jonathan, Edmonton, Alberta and Marcel (Kristan) Brenton, N.S. He is also survived by his special grand-daughter Emma, Edmonton, Alberta, as well as, his only sibling Mary (Peter) Bethune of Yarmouth and her son Greg (Sarah) Williams of Sheffield Mills, N.S.
At a young age, Joe worked alongside his parents in the family store in Port Maitland. His parents instilled in him the value of hard work and the importance of family and community. This lead to a long and successful career in the Public Service. After completing several years of correspondence courses in cooperation with the N.S. Department of Municipal Affairs, he worked as a Tax Assessor in the Clare, Argyle and Yarmouth areas. In 1986, he was asked to participate on a Task Force with the Department which brought him to many regions across the province to support them in the implementation of assessment practices. He then became Supervisor of Residential Assessment for the Southwest Region of Nova Scotia which included the area from Lunenburg to Annapolis. Although his work and continued professional development required him to be away from home, weekends and vacations for exclusively for family. This meant spending time boating and fishing among the Tusket Islands and Tusket River. We became a family of avid boaters and some of our best summers were spent recreational fishing for mackerel, bass and bluefish. We lived and played on the Tusket River.
Joe was also a big car enthusiast and owned a 1976 Jeep which he took to local car shows on the weekends. This was an interest shared with his two sons who are very mechanically inclined (unlike their father) therefore, they were always tasked with the repairs and maintenance required to keep an antique vehicle on the road. Whether it was home renovation projects, boat or Jeep maintenance, Joe always had a plan that would keep his sons busy. His motivation was always to have them nearby.
Joe will also be remembered by many from his involvement in the local sports scene. He was well known as a member of the Yarmouth Junior Hockey League, having won championships and scoring titles and played alongside his cousins and friends from Port Maitland. He continued to play Old Timers Hockey and Senior men’s softball until working away from home no longer made that possible. More recently, Joe was always up for a good game of crib and he played to win and took great pleasure in taking people’s money.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth, N.S.
