Obituary
JOSE FRANCISCO DE ALMADA BRAGA
Jose Francisco De Almada Braga passed away into the presence of his Lord and Saviour, at age 87 on April 7, 2022, after courageously battling kidney disease.
Born on January 29, 1935 in the idyllic island of Santa Maria, (town of Santo Espirito) Azores, Portugal. Jose was predeceased by his five beloved siblings, Felipe, Ines, Alfredo, Herminia, and Maria, as well as his parents, Maria da Conçeiçao de Almada Braga and Jose de Chaves Braga. Jose lost his father at an early age and learned to become a responsible, disciplined young man. Jose was a devoted and faithful husband and father of five. He is survived by his wife, Maria Monteiro Chaves of 63 years, and Arsenio (Kathryn), Cidalia, Anthony, Edward and Diane (Ryan). Grandfather of 13: Laura, Brandon, Jodie, Julia, Micky, Matthew, Christopher, Mark, Risa, Ivy, Violet, Gary and James. He was loved and adored by his nieces and nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews in Canada, U.S.A. and in Santa Maria, Portugal. He touched the lives of countless relatives, friends, and neighbours.
As a young man, Jose had a passion for music, and played in the town band. While in the Portuguese army, he was a baritone player for the band. After his army obligation, he married and started his family and after a few years, he made the difficult decision to leave his homeland and young family to join his pioneering brother in Canada in 1963 as a carpenter. He decided that Canada was a great place to raise a family and brought them over in 1965, settling in Toronto before moving to Mississauga in 1974. He worked hard to support his growing family, finally retiring in 1999. He was a skilled carpenter, and member of the Carpenter’s Local Union for 35 years, who helped build Toronto’s early skyline. In retirement, he would participate in the annual Labour Day Parade, getting admission into the Canadian National Exhibition and getting his free baseball cap. Always willing to help others, his family and friends benefited from his expertise, knowledge and talent.
He fully enjoyed his retirement, spending much of his time with grandchildren and looking after his garden. He learned to swim, and along with his daily walks, he maintained a healthy, active lifestyle. He also donated to many causes, and loved to write in his daily journal, including poetry.
During retirement, Jose and Maria enjoyed travelling, and specifically spending each summer in his childhood home back in beautiful Santa Maria. There, he was in his element, chatting with family and friends and also to all who returned to the island each summer. He knew everyone, and was loved and admired by friends and neighbours on both sides of the ocean.
We shall forever miss our one and only Avô. The memories he made with all of us will truly be cherished. He was a story teller, loved socializing, and enjoyed festivals and parades. We will miss his smile and Tilley hat.
