Memorial Donation
It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of John Walter Martell, announce his passing on January 15, 2022 at the age of 76. Dad was born in L’Ardoise to John Lawrence and Gladys Martell. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sharon (Hurley) Martell. He met Mom while working in Little Bay, NL, eventually settling into their home in Grande Greve, NS. Together they had 3 sons – Darren, Kenny, and Sean. Sean and his wife Christi Davis-Martell made him a proud Papa to 3 wonderful grandkids – Kaelin, Connor and Cooper. Dad is also survived by his mother Gladys, sister Isabelle (Louis) Sampson, brother Mike (Marg) and sister Joanne, along with several in-laws, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Dad worked hard over the years – everything from forestry in Cape Breton with his uncle Harold, mining in Newfoundland with his father, to managing the Esso in St. Peters for his uncle Leonard. The remainder of his career was spent as a heavy-duty mechanic at Mac Motors in Port Hawkesbury.
Beyond his work, he had a passion for the outdoors. Everything from skiing and canoeing in Cape Breton to camping and salmon fishing in Newfoundland, he loved to share his experiences with his full family. Later in life, he turned more of his attention to his community. He was especially proud of his time as Akela with the Wolf Cubs of St. Peters and the work he and Mom shared with the St. Peters and Area Food Bank.
For those who knew him, he was always ready to share the latest joke that turned him red in the face with laughter; He loved finding new material online, sharing it daily. He was always eager to pull a prank on those he loved if he could pull it off without laughing. In his downtime, he enjoyed his sudoku which he always had by his side.
Dad was always mindful to being the best son, dad, papa, brother, or friend he could be. There’s no doubt in our minds that he was, as it showed through the love that he shared with all of us.
Cremation has taken place and a funeral mass in celebration of his life will be held at Holy Guardian Angels church in L’Ardoise at a later date. If you would like to make a memorial donation in his name, Dad would have loved for any to be made to the St. Peters and Area Food Bank, or a food bank of your choice.
