John Thomas “Tom” Bourgeois
1945-2022
John Thomas
“Tom” Bourgeois – age 76, of New Minas, passed away on July
21, 2022. Born on November 22, 1945, in Halifax, Tom grew up in
Saulnierville and was very proud of his Acadian heritage. He was a son
of the late Peter Bourgeois, Florence McDermott and Emily
Comeau.
Tom spent most of his
working life in the grocery business which moved his family around the
Maritimes for many years before settling in New Minas 36 years ago.
After learning he had polycystic kidney disease in his early 40’s, Tom
dedicated a lot of his time to volunteer work with the Kidney
Foundation – Melva Walker Chapter. Tom was a strong supporter of organ
donation, especially since he received the gift of life in 1993- a
kidney transplant. Tom’s new kidney gave him 25 years free of dialysis
treatment and a new lease on life. Despite many ups and downs with his
health over the years, Tom always remained positive and made the most
out of life right to the end. He enjoyed hockey, 60’s music, regular
family game nights, crib with friends and one on one Scrabble games
with his wife. Tom was very social and enjoyed having coffee with
“the boys” and meeting new people. Family was everything to
him.
He is survived by his
wife of 54 years, Carol; daughters, Crystal (Tim) Farrell, New Minas;
Melody Bourgeois (Andrew Foster), Dartmouth; siblings, Mary MacLean,
Cambridge; Peter Bourgeois, Ontario; Florence (Paul) Duguay, Quebec;
Marie Thimot, Dartmouth; Allier Comeau, France; Gus (Rose) Comeau,
Bridgewater; Ruth (Harold) Kenney, Dartmouth; nieces, nephews and
extended family.
He was predeceased by
sister, Patsy Whynot; brother, Russell Mortimer and brother-in-law,
Nelson Thimot.
Cremation has taken
place and there will be no visitation, by request. The funeral
service, followed by a reception, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on
Thursday, July 28, 2022, in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville,
Father Keith Billard officiating. For those unable to attend, a video
webcast of the service will be available at that time. Burial will
take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill. The family would
like to thank the Valley Hospice for making Tom’s final days more
comfortable and peaceful; the nurses in the Dialysis Unit at the
Valley Regional Hospital for taking care of him three days a week for
treatment and Dr. Judith Puetz for being a caring and attentive family
doctor. Donations in Tom’s memory may be made to the Kidney Foundation
or The Valley Hospice in Kentville. Funeral arrangements have been
entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services,
