Obituary
John Theodore Steile III passed away on June 2, 2022 at his home in Peachland, British Columbia from complications of Pulmonary Emboli.
He was born October 13, 1945 in Rupert, Idaho to Mary Frances Mott and John Theodore Steile Jr. of Jerome, Idaho.
John is survived by his daughter, Sarah Aardema of Twin Falls, Idaho; sons: Shaun Steile of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii (Heather), Kevin Beson (Jimena) White Rock, British Columbia, and Stephen Beson (Laureen), Grand Prairie, Alberta; granddaughters: Ashlyn Aardema- Brown, Maddie Aardema-Vander Hulst, Sophia Beson and grandsons: Collin Aardema, Cameron Beson, Connor Beson, and Corbin Steile.
John graduated from Jerome High School in 1963;attended UC Santa Barbara, matriculated from Christian-Albrecht’s Universitat in Kiel, Germany, received a BS (cum laud) from the University of Utah in 1968, and Doctor of Optometry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1972 (summa cum laud).
Dr. Steile practiced primary care optometry in Jerome, Twin Falls, and Hailey, Idaho before moving to Scottsdale, Arizona in 1985, where he practiced with the Dulaney Eye Center in refractive and post-cataract surgery management. In 1992, Dr. Steile moved to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to work with Magrabi Hospitals and Centers with the then, new excimer laser. In 1995, Dr. Steile was appointed Asst. Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Arizona, Tucson. Upon returning to the Middle East in 1996; he directed the building of new centers for Magrabi in Cairo, Abu Dhabi, Muscat, and Dubai until his retirement in 2010.
Dr. Steile lectured internationally on excimer laser technology and corneal topography, specialty contact lens fitting, keratoconus, and trained 100’s of eye doctors in modern Optometry and Ophthalmology.
John lettered in high school football and basketball and played freshman basketball at UCSB. He enjoyed international travel, golf, scuba diving. He was a PADI instructor with 3000 logged dives around the world. He was an active Rotarian while in the US and was a brother of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity at the University of Utah. Dr. Steile was a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, member of the American Optometric Association, past president of the Idaho Optometric Association and the Idaho State Board of Optometry. Dr Steile planned and led charitable eyecare missions to Mexico, Honduras, Yemen, Pakistan, Nepal, India, and Africa.
He was preceded in death by both parents, son-in -law, Mike Aardema, and the love of his life, his beautiful Newfoundland wife, Carol-Ann Beson.
