John Adrian Segeren, age 93, of Stratford and formerly of Huron East passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife and children at the Stratford General Hospital on December 27, 2022. He was born in Made, the Netherlands, son of the late Antonius and Anna Segeren.
Driven by the prospect of better opportunities, John immigrated to Canada with his cherished Corrie in 1953. Working with his sponsor, he farmed in the Grand Bend area and later with his brother Sjaan in the Dublin area. Embellishing his abilities, John was lucky enough to be hired at Robert Bell Industries Ltd. where he was taught how to weld. Wanting a challenge, he moved to Cleaver Brooks, Stratford, working as a supervisor before running his own business, Huron Canadian Fabricators in Seaforth. Selling the business, John was able to attain his ultimate goal of farming, which he was very successful at, for many years. John and Corrie left the farm moving to Sebringville in 1986. Upon his supposed retirement, to stay busy, John earned his real estate licence and used his experience in farming to help others buy and sell property within the agriculture market. To add to his retirement activities John also drove school bus, until 80 years old. Supporting Corrie in her bed and breakfast business, he poured many coffees, made many fruit salads, loved the company and enjoyed conversations with all who enjoyed their stay. Sudden changes resulted in John moving to River Gardens in 2020.
His work ethic, quality of life and dedication to family was impressive. His smile was infectious; his laugh resounding; his story telling intense, and the stories were almost always funny. We will continue to repeat these stories, giving credit to a great man, full of life and always giving.
Treasured husband for 69 years of Cornelia “Corrie” Segeren. Loving father of Marianne Smith (Ralph), Melissa Dawson (Danny), Mike, John (Tracey) and Melanie Segeren (Andre). Opa to Everett (Charlene), Curtis (Jennifer), Jennifer (James), Brock (Laura), Josh (Christy), Allison (Karl), Brittany (Aaron), Brad (Chelsea), Jamie (Kalie), Brendan (Carly), Lindsay (Jesse), Jonathan, Lauren, Kristen, Daan and Katelyn. Great grandfather of Jocelyn, Ella, Herman, Jack, Kade, Anna, Jacob, Braxton, Archie, Westley, Fiona, Adrian, Julianne, James, Clara and Finley. Also survived by daughter-in-law Lorie Talbot (Rick), several nieces and nephews and several in-laws.
Predeceased by son Jim (Lorie), son-in-law Larry (Melissa) and siblings Sjaan, Cor, Adrie, Harry and To.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to the River Garden Residence staff in Stratford, where John lived comfortably and was well cared for during his final years. John also received personal worker support through Home Instead, which allowed him the privilege to continue to live with his dear wife, Corrie. Thank you also to the Stratford General Hospital doctors and staff as well as his family physician Dr. Thomasson for their care.
A private family service will be held on Saturday, January 7 at 11 a.m. Those who wish to join the family from home can join the webcast link found on the funeral home website.
