Obituary
After a long and rewarding life, John passed away peacefully at the age of 90. The youngest of six children, John was born in Ottawa, Ontario to parents Theresa Anastasia Ryan and Ross William McIntosh. He completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in engineering and geology at Carlton, McGill and Queen’s Universities. In 1958, John married the love of his life, Maureen Theresa Doherty of Campbellford, Ontario. Over the next 64 years, they raised three sons (Richard, Lawrence and Andrew) and a daughter (Marla), and lived across Canada in Cardiff, Labrador City, Atikokan, Fernie, Calgary and Fort McMurray. In recognition of his untiring devotion towards his community and the mining industry, John received a 1992 “unsung hero” award from the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. Upon retirement in 1993, he and Maureen returned to Calgary to enjoy the next chapters of their lives. John loved outdoor sports including skiing, golf and curling. He was also an active volunteer in his home parish of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at 11:00am, with interment to follow at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. If friends so desire, we request that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
