Obituary
Long time resident of Hines Creek and Fairview, John Petrowich passed away on August 7, 2022.
John was born on April 28, 1931 in Peace Grove, Alberta and was one of 4 sons of Wasyl and Mary who immigrated from Ukraine in 1927.
In 1942, John, his parents and brothers Steve and Walter moved from Peace Grove to Royce district where they settled on the family homestead. John loved farming and it became his life long passion. John started his teenage years working on threshing crews during the summer months. In 1953 John began his adventures in the trucking business spending winters driving lumber trucks. From 1959 to 1963 John and Steve worked in bush camps, coming home only on weekends.
In 1957, John met Ruth Dewsbury from Gartly who was working in Fairview. John and Ruth married in 1959 in Calgary. They took over the family homestead and had 2 sons, Michael and Mark.
In 1978, John and Steve, later joined by Walter, purchased log trucks and began hauling logs. John loved the bush and spent many winter days travelling up and down bush roads north of Hines Creek. Eventually, John left the trucking industry but continued farming up until 2000, before fully retiring in their new home in Fairview.
John and Ruth enjoyed camping and winter getaways to Hawaii and other sun destinations. John was fortunate to make 2 trips to Ukraine with his sons in 2008 and in 2010 and visited the village where his Mother and Father were born and raised.
John was predeceased by his loving wife Ruth, parents, Mary and Wasyl, brothers Andrew, Steve and Walter. John is survived by his sons Michael and Mark, daughter-in-law Jamie and cherished grandchildren Carson and Haley.
Visitation will be held on Friday August 12 at 7:00 pm at the Peace Valley Funeral Home in Fairview. Service will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 13th. Interment to follow at St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery in Royce. Service to be officiated by Father Isidore Onyeka. Following the service, friends are invited to join the family at the Dunvegan Inn in Fairview at 3pm.
