John Penner passed away near Brooks on December 21, 2022 at the age of 94. John was born on February 26, 1928 in Wymark, Saskatchewan, the eldest son of Dave and Lizzie Penner. John married Viola Wombold in November, 1951 and together they raised three children here in Brooks. John worked in many fields from road construction in the 1950’s, operating the Esso on the highway, owning Co-Operator’s Insurance, co-owner of M&P Sports in the 1970’s and he even worked in the oil patch for a time. He’s probably best known for being a car salesman, which he had a knack for and continued doing in a personal capacity right up until last spring. In 1980, he met Ellie Bauer and they made a life together for 38 years. They travelled a lot throughout Canada and the U.S and made their home in their RV. Although a permanent home had them moving from town to town, Brooks finally called them home. John loved fishing and road trips. In his younger years, he considered himself an avid camper and sports enthusiast. He enjoyed baseball, curling, golf and watched all Blue Jay’s games and men’s curling on TV. John was predeceased by his parents, brother Lester Penner and wife Ellie in 2019. He is survived by his sons Bryan (Deb) and Bruce (Debbie); daughter Blenda Rushka, all of Brooks; 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. We would like to thank the RCMP, Bow City Fire Department and all involved in the search and recovery. Special thanks to Bill Annett, who knew just where to look and found our Dad. Thank you to Kelly and the staff at Smith Funeral Home. A private family service will be held. In memory of John, if friends desire, donations may be made directly to Brooks Fire Department, Bag 880, Brooks, Alberta T1R 0Z6 and/or County of Newell Fire Department or charity of one’s choosing.
Cremation is entrusted to and conducted at
