John MacGillivray Friday October 7th 2022

It is with great sadness that we share the news that John Adrian MacGillivray died on October 7th, 2022, following the long goodbye with Alzheimer’s disease. He went by many names and titles. Master Warrant Officer. Husband. Dad. GPA, Grandpa and Great GPA. His career was one of service to his country, proudly wearing an RCAF uniform from 1955 to 1981 and then at the Department of Defence as a civilian until his retirement. He traded his uniform for an immaculate suit but kept the same focus on the advancement of others and an incredible work ethic. He served in Europe, Canada and the United States and got to see some beautiful places along the way. John could best be described as devoutly Nova Scotian. He spoke of reverence for his home though we all came to doubt if he really had to walk uphill both ways to school with no boots! He loved his family, the game of golf, the odd Western and the Legal TV channel. No one could cook a BBQ steak quite like him. He had a quiet and steadfast demeanour, the most beautiful baby blue eyes, and the uncanny ability to remember what club you hit on your approach to the 7th green two weeks ago. GPA exemplified generosity. Of his time. Of his attention. Of a handful of $20s to his grandkids as they put themselves through school. Of his desire to help with his grandkids, painting a house, waiting for deliveries, or supervising projects. He is survived by a lot of people who will carry his story forward. He leaves behind his wife of nearly 65 years Heather. His children Debbie (Jim) and Donna (Jeff) and his grandchildren Brian (Michelle), Jay, Stephanie (Jason), Bailey (Lauren), Alan (Lexi), and Lisa (Dakota). He even got to meet his great grandchildren Zoe Michelle, Elliot Adrian and Tanner John, all of whom will soon be the recipients of our attempts to provide GPA’s lessons in golf etiquette and golf swing fundamentals.A graveside service at Beechwood Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Ave., Vanier, ON will take place on Friday, October 21st, 2022 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Beyond 21 (www.beyond21.org) or buy that new putter you’ve been eyeing. John would be pleased to know you’re focusing on your short game.
