John Leo Schabler was born In St. Rose Du Lac Manitoba BC. Nov 27, 1939.
John lived to a ripe age of 83 and he passed away peacefully in Clearwater BC Dec 6, 2022.
Having served as a patriot serving our country and NATO for 33 years before retiring to the Corp of commissioners before finally really retiring in Abbotsford and finally in Barriere BC.
John having served in the Canadian Military had spent time in many places. From Germany 3 times to, Cyprus, and In Canada, Cole Lake, Winterpeg, Shilo, Aldergrove, Chilliwack, Yarrow, Barriere, and Abbotsford where he met his third and final wife Charlotte where they moved to Barrier to spend the remainder of their lives.
As John’s friends and family can attest to; his major passion was fishing, camping was a close second and of course spending time with people he was close to.
What you might not know was how much he loved tinkering; a few classic examples were when living in a property in Yarrow we had a large 0.7-acre chunk of land that was ½ garden ½ grass this way too many fruit trees. Dad made a apple crusher to smash the apples into pulp that used about 1000 screws, not sure where the plans came from but I think a popular science magazine as well as a apple press. Both worked amazing well and good thing as we had so many apples/cherries/pears/plums and grapes to feed a small town.
John also loved trying to fix things but that’s where almost every time something went a bit askew. Lawnmowers need all the parts back in place or blades could come flying off and embed themselves into the chicken coup 200 feet away!
Wherever John lived or visited he always had his fishing rod ready. Many before sunrise mornings were spent traveling to a lake or river for a day’s hard work fishing. Of course, family and friends were along for the experience. The Fraser River almost claimed John a few times and his boat once.
Dad lived a good full life and was quite pleased that he lived as long as he did for the fact that both his father and brother died at only 59 years old. Having recently lost his wife and even more recently his sister Lucille he felt grateful for the time he spent on earth.
John a big heart and as a father never got mad or raised his voice …very often. Dad loved people, animals and the small things in life that many people overlook every day.
As per dad’s wishes he asked to be cremated. I know of a perfect place to spread his ashes and it’s a little lake in Clearwater where on many different trips we lost so many things in the lake. So, John will be reunited with his hat, glasses and a very nice fly fishing rod / reel / and tasty fly.
At a future date a celebration of life will be held in Barriere where all his friends and family can come and share their stories of this remarkable man. A post in the local paper and dad’s network of friends will be notified.
