Obituary of John Joseph Marchand Johnny Backhoe
It is with deep sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of our precious husband, dad, papa/pépé, brother, and friend, John Joseph Marchand (Johnny Backhoe) of Louisdale, on April 2, 2022 at the Strait Richmond Hospital in Evanston at the age of 80 years. Born June 15, 1941, he was the son of the late Thomas and Mary Celina (Burns) Marchand.
Johnny began his career at the young age of 14 alongside his parents in Blues Mills, employed in construction. He found his calling operating heavy equipment, thus earning his nickname “Johnny Backhoe” and was known to be able to make the backhoe walk. He fine-tuned his expertise over the years working for Carson Construction, T Sampson Backhoe Services (T Sampson & Sons), and lastly with his brother, at Wilf’s Demolition.
Johnny was a passionate outdoorsman. He loved his fishing trips with his sons, nephews, and extended family and friends. And when summer turned to fall, he donned his camo, ready for hunting season. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited, Richmond Chapter, and a lifelong member of the Master Hunters Club in Louisdale.
His dedication to his community was evident through his participation with the Louisdale & District Volunteer Fire Department, as well as being known for always lending a helping hand to anyone in need.
On July 1, 1961 he married the love of his life, Delores. Their love was inspiring to anyone who knew them. Whether they were dancing, playing cards, word games or holding hands watching television, the love between Johnny and Delores was a shining example to all who knew them.
Together, they raised four children, instilling in them a strong work ethic and strong family values. Johnny’s love for his family knew no bounds. He was so proud of his children, grandchildren and his great-grandsons and lit up whenever they were around. His presence will be sorely missed.
Johnny is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Delores (Samson) Marchand, Louisdale; sons, Glen (LeeAnne), Jerry (Kathleen), both of Louisdale, Dean (Amanda) St. Andrews; son-in-law, Alcantra “Buzzy” Landry, Louisdale; grandchildren, Jennifer (Amelia), Shayne (Aurora), Laurenn (Daphne), Jillian, Kara (Jeff), Emilie-Kate, Joya-Brynn; great grandchildren, Zennon, Brooks, Beckett; brother, Wilfred (Leona), Louisdale; sisters, Delores Theriault, Dartmouth, Eleanor (Adrian) Boudreau, Petit de Grat, Leonard Macdonald, brother in law, Louisdale And many-in-laws, nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Theresa Ann Landry; sister, Emily MacDonald; brother-in-law, Clem Theriault, and brother in infancy, Thomas.
Our family would like to extend our most sincere appreciation for the compassionate care offered to Dad from Dr. Stephen DeRoche, Dr. Laurie MacNeil, the nurses in the emergency and palliative care departments, and his numerous homecare workers who helped Dad enjoy his last few years in his lovingly restored home. We also extend our gratitude to the staff of C.H. Boudreau for their support and professionalism.
