John Joseph Cavarzan
June 7, 1938 – April 5, 2022
Our beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 5th, 2022. Loving husband of Hélène (née Bouchard) for 54 years. Cherished and proud Father of Lian (Craig), Marcia (Michael) and Dana (Erin). Dearly loved Grandpa of Alexander, Kinsley, Makenna, Cali, and Ava. John will be sadly missed by his brother Sonny (Beverley) and his sister Gloria (late Angelo). Predeceased by his parents Fortunato and Augusta Cavarzan and his mother and father-in-law Maurice and Laura Bouchard. Having married into a large family, he will be dearly missed by brothers and sisters-in-law Liliane (Jim), Robert (Sue), Diane (Dennis), Alain (Janet) and Bertrand, as well as his many nieces and nephews. He was very thankful for his long-time treasured friends and the camaraderie of his colleagues. He will be fondly remembered by many relatives and friends both in Canada and in Italy.
John was an alumnus of McMaster University, University of Ottawa and Osgood Law School. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1964 and enjoyed a very diverse and fulfilling legal career. For 20 years, he made significant contributions as a lawyer and Director of the Constitutional Law Branch at the Ministry of the Attorney General. He was appointed to the bench of the Superior Court of Justice in 1991. After 22 years of distinguished service, he retired in 2013.
Although his career achievements were significant, he remained humble and was first and foremost a family man. He instilled in everyone the importance of books and the power of knowledge. He has passed on his passion for good food, great literature, long walks, cycling at the beach, and the awe of watching a plane go by.
The Cavarzan Family wishes to thank Dr. Kouroukis and the Hematology Team at Hamilton’s Juravinski Hospital for their wonderful care.
There will be a private visitation for family and extended family. A public Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 20 Idlewood Avenue, Hamilton, Ontario on Monday April 11th, 2022, at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery, 600 Spring Gardens Road, Burlington, Ontario.
