John “Jack”‘s Obituary
John “Jack” Kenneth MacKay, long time resident of Fairview (AB) passed away on January 21, 2020 at the age of 87 years.
Jack grew up on the farm with his sisters, parents, animals and pets. He was a prankster of great renown, often playing tricks on his sisters and schoolmates. After graduating high school Jack attended the Fairview Agricultural School where he graduated with a diploma. He spent the next years farming on the family farm and acting in various plays. It was in one of these productions, “Life with Father,” that he met his future wife, Betty Moe. They had three children who were subsequently infused with their parents’ collective love of art and literature.
Over time, Jack was involved in various community organizations, most recently serving as a long-time member of the North Peace Gas Co-op board. He was an avid reader with an uncanny gift of memorizing poetry. Many local people have been offered recitations over the years and it was something that gave him great joy.
Jack had experienced his own trials and tribulations during his twenties, and had become a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. No matter what time the phone would ring or who was on the other end, he would go to try and assist a person in need and he remained involved until shortly before his death. It was a personal mission of his to see AA continue in the community as it had helped him become sober.
Jack is predeceased by his parents, John and Tena MacKay; sisters, Christie Woronuk, Marion Sproule, Hazel Peterson & Jean MacKay.
Jack leaves behind to mourn his loving wife Betty MacKay; son, John (Moira) MacKay; daughter, Pam MacKay; & son, Peter (Stephanie) MacKay as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Jack’s Life is planned for Saturday, July 9 at 11:00 AM. If friends desire, donations may be made to the Hope Mission, Edmonton as expressions of sympathy.
