It is with sadness that we announce the passing of John Hale (Jack) Jamieson on April 20th, 2022, at the age of 84. Jack died peacefully at home with family by his side after a short battle with cancer.
Jack was born in Seattle Washington on February 5, 1938, to John and Elda Jamieson. In 1948 the family moved back to Armstrong to take over the family newspaper and printing business (Armstrong-Enderby Publishing Company). Jack grew up in Armstrong, graduated from Armstrong Highschool in 1956 and eventually attended Ryerson University in Toronto where he completed a program in journalism. While on a work term in Whitehorse in the summer of 1958, Jack met Dawn Bethune. They married in 1960 in Edmonton. The young couple lived in Chilliwack before moving to Whitehorse where Jack worked for the Whitehorse Star and also wrote for Time magazine. They then moved to Prince George where Jack worked for the Prince George Citizen and their first child was born. They eventually moved to the Lower Mainland where Jack worked in Human Resources for Dairyland, settling in Port Moody and welcoming their second child. In 1969 Jack returned to Armstrong to take over the family business. He spent the remainder of his professional career as the Editor and Publisher of the local newspapers (Armstrong Advertiser and Enderby Commoner) and running the printing business, the third generation of his family to do so.
Jack was an active and involved community leader. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Masons and was a past president of the Rotary Club. He was president of the 1987-88 Interior Provincial Exhibition and also actively involved in the Abbeyfield Society and the Haugen Health Center. He was instrumental in getting a Radio Tower installed on PV Road and he volunteered at the Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum and Art Gallery. He was also a member of the Probus Club in Vernon. Jack shared Armstrong Citizen of the Year honors with Dawn in 2006.
Jack was an avid fisherman. He spent many hours on the lake trolling and fly-fishing. He also enjoyed a number of ocean-fishing trips in the Pacific Northwest and internationally, particularly enjoying cruise travel.
Jack was pre-deceased by his father and mother and his wife Dawn. He is survived by his children JJ (Kyna) in Texas and Jodi (Dirk) in Vernon and by his much adored granddaughters Aleen and Chloe. Jack was adamant that he did not want any service or ceremony to honor his death. Instead, he would be happy if you remember him in your own way, perhaps sharing a memory of him with a friend.
