Obituary
John Hugo Bergstrom
It is with great sadness that we share John Hugo Bergstrom passed away on February 10, 2022 after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Norma, daughters Bonnie and Corinne, grandchildren Ethan, Sophie, Kaden and Ellie, brother Dwight (Dodi) and sister Beverly Krause (Eldon), and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents Hugo and Annie Bergstrom.
John was born October 1, 1940 in Wetaskiwin and grew up in this area. In 1950, his parents moved to New Sweden, which always held a special place in John’s heart. It was here that the foundational roots of his faith were grown through Sunday school, Bible study and church. His growing up years centered around the New Sweden Church and farming community, and many lifelong friendships were made.
In high school, John discovered a love for classic cars, which spanned his lifetime. He often reminisced about the adventures he and his friends had “cruising” in his 1949 Ford. He met his love, Norma Hirsekorn, in Grade 12 and they were married in 1961.
John and his father Hugo worked closely together farming and running Bergstrom Livestock Trucking. His dad’s interest in the west country and logging industry led to the purchase of land in the Pigeon Lake area in 1965. In 1971, John’s family moved to a beautiful farm “out west” where there were many years of hard work clearing and working the land, raising beef cattle and taking care of his “girls”.
John and Norma started attending Breton Covenant Church where they made many new family friendships. The years of raising their daughters included many happy memories of camping trips, campfire singalongs, snowmobiling, bike rides and skating on the pond in the winter. John’s mischievous, fun spirit brought much laughter to these times.
In 1975, John started driving school bus in the Winfield area. Affectionately known as “Mr. B.” , he is fondly remembered by local families for his kindness to the many kids who rode his bus over his 46 years of driving. John retired in December 2020.
In the 2000’s, John and Norma enjoyed becoming grandparents and spending time with friends over a cup of coffee and piece of pie. John and his brother, Dwight, collected classic automobiles and spent many weekends at auctions. Over the years, they built an impressive collection and their online auction in the summer of 2021 drew interest from across Canada.
John always treasured his Swedish heritage and throughout his life remained connected to relatives in Sweden. He looked forward to cousins and their families visiting Canada and one of his fondest memories is a trip shared with his family, grandkids and cousin Rolf to Nashville, TN. John also travelled to Sweden on three different occasions and valued those times of connecting with his heritage and father’s family.
John will be remembered for his kind, generous nature and quiet faith that he lived out every day. With his signature cowboy hat and warm welcoming smile, he always had time to chat with family, friends, neighbours and strangers. He leaves a lasting impact on anyone on who knew him. John was a loving and protective husband, father and grandfather, a loyal friend and a man of faith, and he will be deeply missed.
John’s family would like to thank the health care professionals at Winfield Home Care and the Red Deer Hospice Society for their compassionate care throughout John’s cancer journey. If desired, memorial donations may be made to Red Deer Hospice Society, 99 Arnot Ave, Red Deer, Alberta T4R 3S6.
A memorial celebration of John’s life will take place later this spring.
