Obituary
John Howard Dyck formerly of Steinbach and MacGregor passed away of cancer at MacGregor Care Home on January 24, 2022. He was predeceased by brother Henry in 1947, his Mother Annie (Nee Wieler) in 1954, his step Mom Anna (Nee Penner) in 1986, his Father Abram Dyck in 1990, and Brother Peter in 2021.
John was baptized on confession of his faith in May 1970 in MacGregor by Bishop John A. Friesen. Married to Barbara (Nee Janzen in 1971). John and Barbara separated in 1997. John moved to Steinbach in 1997 where he lived for almost 25 years. As his health began to decline he spent time in and out of several hospitals in Winnipeg, Steinbach and Winkler. In July of 2021 he was able to get a space in MacGregor Hospital.
John is survived by his children: Steve & Crystal (Johnathan, Carter); Julie & Dan (Aliyah, Barrett, Tiana); Tanya & Lyndon Vrooman (Xavier); his siblings Marge (John) Unrau, Abe (Susan) Dyck, Jake (Gloria) Dyck, Helen (Menno) Wiebe, Henry (Martha) Dyck, Anne (Henry) Neufeld; sister in law Esther, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
John grew up South of MacGregor in the Rosehill District and later moved North of MacGregor on a small mixed farm where the primary income was shipping cream. Later the cream quota was exchanged for a milk quota. He also farmed a variety of other animal’s hogs, turkeys as well as market garden. Most of the beef, poultry, pork and garden produce was used for our own family use. John also worked in road construction for a period of time and worked on projects like building the dike by Roseau River and Vita. He also worked on sections of the Trans-Canada Highway in the Carberry area just to name a few. His road construction skills made it possible for him to drive bulldozer making fire breaks during a Riding Mountain fire. John had other jobs away from the farm but he seemed to really enjoy operating the heavy equipment and spoke of it fondly.
John was diagnosed with bi-polar/manic depression later on in his life. We believe he had this condition his whole life, it just took a while to give it a name. Looking back this explains a lot of John’s actions and choices in his life, those who are left behind have to come to terms with the events of the past that have shaped us into people we are today. We would like to take this opportunity to say we can’t apologize for John’s actions/choices in his life, all we and you can do is forgive and try not to make the same errors.
We as a family would like to thank all those family members, friends that prayed for us, stood by us and physically helped us through a very trying and difficult childhood.
We’d like to also thank all those in the health care community as they helped John on his journey as he dealt with his physical and mental health challenges.
Thanks to Clarke’s Funeral Home for their care and understanding as we worked through all the arrangements.
Memorial donations may be made to the family to assist with funeral expenses.
