“I shall pass through this world
but once. Any good that I can
show another human being, let
me do it now, for I shall not
pass this way again.” Stephen

Jean. Their marriage took

the next 66 years, their love
continued to grow and
strengthen, and was enriched
by the birth of their children,

John was
educated in England, and the
mottos of the two schools he
attended influenced and
motivated him in both the
direction and destination of his
life. Fulfilling his preparatory
schools’ motto; Expecta Dominum
Mens Sana in Corpore Sano,
he graduated from Manchester University as
an Electrical Engineer (B.Sc)
and 50 years later with a B.A.
from the University of
Waterloo. He was an avid
golfer, sailor, skier, rower, and
completed four marathons. His
second school motto was
Expecta Dominium, which
resulted in his becoming a
lifelong active, committed and
faithful member of the
Anglican Church. He came to
St. Catharines in 1958 to
establish the Sterling Varnish
Company. In 1962, he became
its Executive Vice President,
and he remained in this
position until his retirement in
1991. During this time, he
served as a Chairman or Board
member of a number of
Provincial, National and
International industrial trade
organizations. In 1993 he was
inducted into the Electrical
Insulation industry’s Hall of
Fame. John was an
enthusiastic and dedicated
volunteer, involved in a wide
range of community organizations.
He was President of
both the St. Catharines
Chamber of Commerce and
the Junior Chamber of
Commerce, a teacher in Junior
Achievement, and a member of
the PROBUS club of St.
Catharines. He served for 15

Catharines General Hospital,
and was the founding
Chairman of the St. Catharines
General Hospital Foundation.
He was a past President and
General Campaign Chair of the
St. Catharines United Appeal.
He was an Honorary member
of the St. Catharines Golf Club,
and served on its Board of
Directors. He was also a
member of, and served on the
Board of the Rotary Club of St.
Catharines, and in recognition
of his volunteer commitments
to it and other community
organizations, in 1983 he was
awarded a Paul Harris
Fellowship. In keeping with his
wishes, cremation has taken
place. Arrangements entrusted
