MACASKILL, John D. “Beaver”
We, the family, regret to announce the passing of John D. “Beaver” MacAskill on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born October 5, 1932, in Sydney, he was the son of the late Archie and Christina “Tena” (MacDonald) MacAskill.
Until retirement, Beaver worked in sales at Cape Breton Battery. He was an adherent of Harbour Light Church, Sydney and a lifelong fan and participant of harness racing. Some favourite horses he cared for over the years included Precious Ace, Garden Mist, Baby Dill and Elm Grove Goldie.
Beaver is survived by his daughter, Keri; sisters, Chris (the late Pat) Chiasson and Hattie MacAskill; brother, Murdock (Marilyn); and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Nancy (MacDonald); three siblings in infancy; and niece, Velma MacInnis.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday, May 12 from 4-7p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel on Friday, May 13 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Ian Crooks officiating. Interment will take place in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Tom MacNeil Patient Care Fund or the An Cala, Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
