John Cyril Stephenson 1927- 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving father and grandfather on the 19th of July, 2022. He persevered through several challenges to his mobility and health in the past 10 years, and passed away peacefully after a brief stay at Sunnybrook Hospital, during which he was grateful to be visited by many beloved family members. John was born on the 6th of September, 1927 to Hazel and Herbert (Roy) Stephenson in Toronto. He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Hugh and Ted; his first wife, Donna; his second wife, Margaret (Peggy); his son, Mark; and his grandson, John David. John graduated from Upper Canada College and went on to study engineering at the University of Toronto. He spent his career at Johns Manville and Scotia McLeod, where he was a great mentor, colleague, and friend to many. His life was abundant with many passions. He became an avid golfer early in life, spending many cherished days with his father, and later with friends, at Rosedale Golf Club. He was a keen and accomplished bridge player, and an ardent history lover. He spent many memorable holidays in Barbados at the Colony Club with family and friends, but perhaps some of his favourite times were spent on cherished family vacations at Redstone Lake in Haliburton, enjoying daily swims well into the chilly autumn. He also enjoyed many fishing, hunting, canoeing trips and bridge weekends with his lifelong friends. He will be missed dearly by his family: daughters Julie (Peter Wood) and Jenny, grandson James (Marielle Bryck), and many dear nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. The family wishes to express gratitude to the staff at The Claremont, as well as to Drs. Angriman, Bodely and all the wonderful nurses, physicians and care team in the Departments of Critical Care, the Neurovascular Unit, the Trauma Ward, and the Emergency department at Sunnybrook. John placed great importance on giving back to others, and supported many charities. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the SPCA, your favorite animal rescue, or Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in John’s memory. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on July 28, 2022 at Christ Church Deer Park at 1570 Yonge St. Reception to follow at Rosedale Golf Club, 1901 Mt. Pleasant Rd, Toronto.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of John Cyril Stephenson 1927- 2022..

  1. Dear Jenny and Julie, I am so sorry to hear about your dad. He was a good man and a thoroughly loyal person who loved his family very much. Our parents, Laura and Larry Baldwin, were very fond of John and were friends for many decades. He talked about you with great affection. My thoughts are with you.
