John Charles Neal, F.C.I.A., passed away in the late afternoon on August 13th, 2022 at home surrounded by family. John is survived by his wife Gemma, his children Tara (Simon), and Erin (Tim), and his grandchildren Declan, Kayleigh, and Charlotte. He is predeceased by his parents Dora and Graham, as well as his sister Laurie, who passed away in England just one day before John.
John was born in London, England in 1945. He moved to Canada in February 1968, followed 9 months later by his soon to be wife, Gemma. He became a Fellow at the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) and worked as the Chief Actuary at the Worker’s Compensation Board from 1975 to 1990, and may have been the youngest person to have ever held this position at the age of 29. He founded Nexus Actuarial Consultants with his friend and business partner, Bruce Neville, in 1994 through to 2018 when he was diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy with aphasia.
John was married on June 6th, 1969. His two daughters were born in 1973 and 1975. He was a caring father who loved spending time with his children teaching them how to play chess and backgammon, how to ski, plus many other activities. He had a love of travel both with his whole family and as a couple with Gemma to places like Mexico, Italy, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. John’s last trip was to Mexico over the 2019/2020 new year with Gemma, Tara, Simon and his grandchildren, immediately prior to the start of COVID.
Before entering actuarial science, John’s undergraduate work at Queen Mary College, London, (UK) was in electrical engineering. There was always a project in the works at John’s home. He was a skilled handy man as well as a superb mathematician with a love of computer technology and technical details. He had an intellectually curious mind, was a great reader and always had many projects on the go. He loved the many cats and dogs that were a part of his family over the years.
John will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
