John Alden MacCallum 1935 2022

John “Alden” MacCallum – 87,
Valley, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at
Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Kemptown, he was
the son of the late John and Jimmiza (MacKay)
MacCallum.
Alden worked for many years with Annand’s Steel,
Nova Scotia Agricultural College and finally with
Stanfield’s where he was a Supervisor in the dye house, and
from where he retired in 1994. He was a long-time member of St. James
Presbyterian Church. He loved to bowl and was active with many bowling
leagues. He and Reg Hingley spent many hours at Kemptown United Church
Cemetery clearing brush, levelling ground and
landscaping.
He was a loyal patron of Main Street and Pictou Road Tim
Hortons where he and his K-9 companion, Lucky, would gather every
morning with the guys, usually gossiping and solving all of the
world’s problems! Many will remember Alden as the man with
the belly, white beard and joyful laugh playing Santa Claus at various
community events.
He loved spending time at his cottage in Brule, and was
meticulous with the upkeep of the cottage property and his home
property, always ensuring that the lawn was cut just so and the snow
wasn’t piled where it shouldn’t be! He would be
the first to help anyone in need, whether it was a friend or stranger,
either at home, at the cottage or on his travels. He was an extremely
outgoing individual and he will be missed by all who knew and loved
him.
Alden cherished his many friends, however, we would like to
thank Jimmy Ives and Florence MacLaughlan in particular; Jimmy would
mow the lawn at the cottage when Alden was unable to do so and
Florence was always willing to help in any way she
could.
Alden is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Carol
(Smith); children, John (Myrna) MacCallum, Harmony; Sherry (Alan)
Smith, Guelph, Ontario; Kevin Smith (Barb Dykeman), Upper
Musquodoboit; grandchildren, James (Cecilia) Ash, Ottawa, Jeffery
Hutchison, Ottawa; Lindsay (Troy) James, Cole Harbour; Linden
MacCallum (Steve Stoddard), Truro; Elisha MacCallum, Lower Harmony;
great grandchildren, Sophia Ash, Ella Ash, JJ Hutchison, Jackson
Hutchison, Camden James, Kanan James, Kingston James, Jaya
MacCallum-Legere, Micah MacCallum-Legere, Tristan Mattatall; K-9
