Obituary
Johann Peters
Johann Peters, 86, of the RM of St. Clements, formerly of Winnipeg, MB, passed away peacefully and went to be with his Saviour, Jesus Christ at Betel Home in Selkirk, Mb on December 5, 2022.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Tina (nee Friesen), 4 children; Arlene, Reg (Char), Angela (Chris), and Derek (Heather); 11 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 1 brother and 1 sister-in-law.
He was predeceased by his parents, 5 brothers, 3 sisters, and 6 infant siblings.
Johann Peters was born in the RM of Rhineland on February 14, 1936 to Jacob Peters and Anna Kornelsen. He was the 8th of 10 children. He was baptised into the Old Colony church at Chortitz, MB in June of 1957 and married Tina Friesen on August 12, 1961. They lived in Winnipeg for the first few years before moving to Saskatoon for a year because of Johann’s work as a crane operator. When they returned to Winnipeg, they settled in the St. Vital area of Winnipeg until retiring to the Pineridge Village area near Birds Hill Park.
Before he married, Johann began working in construction as a general labourer at Harris Construction. By 1966 he had progressed to operating many different types of cranes. He travelled to many locations throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Ontario, working on bridges, pipelines, and buildings. If you ever travelled in a vehicle with Johann, you would have heard him say “I built this bridge and that bridge. This building and that building”. He was even called out of retirement to operate the wrecking ball crane to demolish the old Winnipeg Arena.
Johann enjoyed fishing and hunting. There was always deer meat and a variety of fish in the freezer at home. He was an avid bowler until he was in his 80’s. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play sports, especially hockey and baseball. In his children’s younger years, he also umpired many baseball games.
He was a good story teller and was always ready with a good story or joke. He will always be remembered as a man who loved God and his family. He loved when his children and grandchildren would come visit and was always ready with a smile, a joke, and a story.
The funeral service for Johann Peters will be held on Friday, December 9, 2022 in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel in Selkirk, MB (309 Eveline St) at 11:00 a.m. A private family burial will follow after the service and luncheon. The service can be viewed via the following link youtu.be/iyutJjFn7zA
