Obituary of Joe Brown
Karihwawihson – James Joseph (Joe) Brown
Karihwawihson passed peacefully at home in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory on February 9th, 2022 in his 46th year.
Predeceased by his mother Sharon Hill. Cherished soul mate of Amy (Martha) Brant. Loving Rakeni (father) of Cain Brown ( Allison ), Dakota Brown, Isaac Brown, Colton Cowie, Wade Cowie, Kahyakwas Brown and Yekaronyohs Brown. Treasured Tota Joe to Rowisayewas Brown & Rett Brown.
Brother to Nikki Auten and Sarah Dunkley ( Wayne ).
He will be missed by his many Aunts , Uncles , Nieces, Nephews & Cousins. Lovingly remembered by his many friends and members of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy.
Karihwawihson was known for many accomplishments. He was a proud speaker of the Mohawk Language, always encouraging others to learn and engage as well. He has been directly connected to his culture since the age of twelve and held the title of Faithkeeper in the Kenhteke Kanonsehsne (Longhouse).
After getting his Master’s Degree in Social Work, he and Amy established Rotinonhsyón:ni Cultural Consulting where Karihwawihson practiced mental health counselling and consulting deeply rooted in language and culture. Through this work, and his time as a Guidance Counsellor/Mohawk Language Teacher at Eastside Secondary School, Karihwawihson mentored youth across the community and will be fondly remembered by all.
Community is welcome to pay respects to Karihwawihson- Joe Brown from 12:00pm – 11:00pm Friday February 11th 2022 at 1344 Ridge Road, TMT Sadie’s Lane Longhouse.
Final visitation will be Saturday February 12th 2022 at 7:00 am with service beginning at 11:00am. No entry after 11:00am.
Covid protocols:
Visitors are asked to double mask upon entry, second masks will be provided.
In anticipation of the amount of people needing to be accommodated and covid restrictions in place , visitors are asked to be mindful of their time spent in the longhouse.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested:
* Donations to Kenhteke Kanonsehsne – Longhouse
* Donations to Tsi Tyonnheht Onkwawenna – Language program
* A personal commitment of cultural learning ( song, ceremony, language) in memory of Karihwawihson
