JESUS RODRIGUEZ “SUSO”
February 10, 1936 – March 5, 2022
It is with deep sadness, the daughters of Jesus Rodriguez announce the passing of their charismatic father. He passed away peacefully at the St Boniface hospital in Winnipeg on Saturday, March 5th, at the age of 86.
“Suso” was born on February 10th, 1936 in A Coruña in the province of Galicia, Spain. He was the youngest of three siblings and spent his childhood years living in the countryside of northern Spain living with various families after the untimely passing of their parents. Here he developed his sense of independence and his passion for “living off the land.” This carried through right until his last days, always nurturing whatever plant life he could find.
At 18 years old he enrolled in the Spanish army and spent time in France which fueled his love for travel and exploration. He loved language, and was fluent in Spanish, Italian, French and English.
He immigrated to Thunder Bay, Ontario in his early 30’s where he worked for the Great Lakes Paper Company for 30 years. He adored the company and the friendship of his coworkers. He was a very social man and rarely would you see his face without a ginormous grin.
After settling in Thunder Bay, he returned to Spain to marry Montserrat Rodriguez. Together, they raised their 3 daughters Sandra (Dilpreet Bains), Natalie (Salvatore Valente) and Sylvia (John Gigliotti), and became grandparents to Tyrelle, Torrez, Marlo, Athena, Jamin, Carmen, Nadia and Maseo. Suso was predeceased by his (ex) wife, “Monsita”, almost 3 months earlier.
In 2015, due to health concerns, his daughters moved Jesus to Winnipeg to better care for him.
The family extends a special heartfelt thank you to the staff of Action Marguerite St Bonifice, particularly 4DE for their commitment to care and the joy they brought their dad in his last years.
Following his wishes, there will not be a service, but in his honor, if you have a place you’ve always wanted to visit, he would encourage you to travel and engage in other cultures.
