Jean V. Sutherland, born June 1, 1948, passed away December 21, 2022; from complications of breast cancer, which she had been fighting for a brave second time. The resiliency that had carried Jean through her first battle and throughout her life; unfortunately, was lost to her this last time.
Jean has joined her beloved family and friends that she had watched pass away before her. They include: her parents , Lindsay and Jean (Fleet) Pye; her husband, Jack Sutherland; her sister, Madeline Rodgers (Allison); her brother, Edward Pye (Charlotte); nephew, Wayne Rodgers (Janet); niece, Linda Rodgers; and partner Lloyd McGraw.
Jean spent her entire life living in Ecum Secum, on Nova Scotia’s eastern shore. It is a rugged, beautiful place, that definitely shaped Jean’s character. Hard working, honest and free of frivolities; she was strong-willed and original, who was very much a maritime woman. She enjoyed her view of the ocean, when it wasn’t covered in ever-present fog, and had to stoke the wood stove all year long to keep the dampness at bay. On welcomed sunny days, she was found outside on her deck, watching the traffic whisk by on Highway #7. She knew most cars from memory and loved it when people stopped in to chat. Needless to say, nothing was lost on her when it came to her community.
Jean enjoyed fishing and was employed in the industry for most of her working life. She also loved playing cards with her many card-club friends. She was an avid regular and she looked forward to that time spent with friends. Jean had lots of friends and family all along the Eastern Shore and along the road to Antigonish, who she loved to spend time with, in person or with a call.
Jean is survived by her brothers; Donald (Judy) Pye of Ecum Secum and Wendell (Janet) Pye of the Annapolis Valley; and by many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews and her late husband’s two children.
In accordance with Jean’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or service. A private ceremony will happen in the spring when Jean’s remains are interred; further information will be given at that time. We encourage you to make a donation in Jean’s name to the charity of your choice. Jean’s wish was for everyone to remember her with a smile.
