Jean Hutchings of Brandon passed away January 21, 2022 at the age of 91.
Jean was the first child of Gilbert and Lucy Hopley. Her brother Robert and sister Eunice completed the family.
She attended school in rural Saskatchewan then the family moved to Oak River, Manitoba where she completed her grade 11. She then taught “on permit” for a year at Breadalbane before returning to complete her grade 12 in Hamiota then on to Normal School teacher’s training graduating in 1950. Jean taught in The Pas and Brandon following graduation.
Jean married Bill Hutchings of Oak River on October 18, 1952 and they took over the Hutchings family farm. They had a family of three – Kenneth in 1954, Maxine in 1957 and Kevin in 1964. Sadly, they lost their son Kenny to a brain tumour in 1964.
Community and the United Church were a big part of Jean’s life. She was a Charter Member of the UCW in 1962 and served in many positions over the years until her retirement in 2011. She was presented with a UCW Life Membership in recognition of her many years of service.
Bill and Jean enjoyed many years of pattern dancing and square dancing, travelling, and making lasting friendships.
Jean is survived by her husband of 69 years Bill; daughter Maxine (Dale) Campbell of Dawson Creek; son Kevin (Rosa) of Brandon; grandchildren Kimberlee Hutchings (Kevin Drohan) of Brandon, Blair Hutchings of Edmonton; great granddaughter Hazel Drohan; sister Eunice Sherris and sister-in-law Lynne Hopley; cousins; nieces; and nephews.
