Obituary
It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Jean Doris Olson (75 years) of Bashaw Alberta, on June 29, 2022.
Jean was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan to Alec and Annie Oscienny, being the youngest of three daughters. She grew up on the family farm and went on to meet Garth Olson and were married on August 27, 1966. They spent the first few years around the Yorkton area before Garth receiving his red seal ticket in plumbing and they headed off to British Columbia for work. During this time, they welcomed two sons, Jason and Kevin. The yearning call of farming brought them to the Bashaw area in 1977, where they settled at the famous 1 KM sign to Bashaw on Highway 53 East. They spent many years farming but also Jean worked many jobs off the farm. She spent many years at the Bashaw General Hospital as kitchen staff, the Bashaw Drug Store, the grocery store and finally prior to retiring she enjoyed her time at the Bashaw Hotel under a couple of different owners. After deciding to sell the farm (1988), they purchased and built a business known as the Bashaw Entertainment Center. The Bashaw Entertainment Center thrived for many years as Jean spent countless hours visiting and being the community hub for the youth but also many other members of the community. Jean enjoyed the social aspect of life as seen through her work years, but also spent countless hours with Bashaw Minor Hockey Executive as both boys played minor hockey and could always be counted on the be in the stands no matter where the boys went to play. She was always involved and recognized in the community, often known as “Mean Jean” to many after calling Bashaw home for over 42 years, she headed to Camrose to access supported living in the Bethany Pine Cottage since 2019.
Jean in survived by son Jason (Amy), grandchildren Matt and Emma Olson, sister Iris Takatch, numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces. She was predeceased by husband Garth, son Kevin, sister Evangeline Grunert, nephew Shaun Takatach, and brother in laws Henry Takatch and Lorne Grunert.
In honoring Jean’s wishes there will be no celebration of life service in her memory. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society, or St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation (Camrose) as recognition of her life.
The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff at Bethany Meadows Pine Cottage, St. Mary’s Hospital (Camrose), EMS Staff Camrose and Royal Alex Hospital (Edmonton).
