Obituary
Janet “Mamoo” Brooks – 82 passed away peacefully on October 2, 2022 at Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital with loved ones by her side. Janet was born on August 19, 1940 and bounced around the world living in an Air Force family. She joined the Royal Air Force and became a midwife where she met her husband, Roger. She had the opportunity to travel the world with the Air Force, living in Egypt and Aden for several years. Perhaps it was her early life of constant flux that began shaping her fierce and rebellious independence as she fondly recalled being kicked out of sewing class in exchange for working in the school garden. This is something that spawned her love of gardening as she grew a massive vegetable garden every year as known by anyone who had her dropping off cucumbers and carrots to them. After leaving the RAF, Janet settled down in rural England with Roger who started a life in pig farming. The young couple filled their home with two children, Jane and Roy. Janet stayed home to raise her children and grew immense gardens while doing so. In 1980, Janet and Roger took a tremendous plunge and moved to Nova Scotia in January. They quickly worked to buy a pig farm in Tremont which became a place for young people to come and earn some hard-earned money and learn life’s lessons from one of the most interesting self-determined women. Her door was always open. She was a tough yet compassionate soul that was perpetually even-keeled. She moved through life demanding respect and spreading happiness. Janet worked at the Middleton Medical Clinic for many years where her smile and warm banter cheered up hundreds of people every year. She was always cheerful and immensely efficient in her work. Janet was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as a grandmother to John and Ned (Mamoo as she was known). She had a vivacious personality and always made people around her laugh. She did not need a lot to enjoy life to the fullest which she always did, however she wanted. Janet took an active role in the community for many years. She directed and acted in many plays with the Greenwood Players where she touched the lives of many many people. She was an avid spectator of any and all sports, especially those in which John and Ned were involved. She served as a taxi and trainer for both of her grandsons in all sports and dance, ferrying then from one end of the province to the other. There were many cricket games in Mamoo’s backyard (where she mowed the lawn extra short for that reason). They will be eternally grateful for the hundreds of hours spent with Mamoo. She couldn’t have been prouder of the fine young men that they have become. Janet is survived by her husband of 56 years, Roger as well as her daughter, Jane, brother Jeffery and her grandsons, John and Ned. She has gone to join her son, Roy, who has been waiting 15 years to see his mother and best friend again. She will be warmly remembered through the many wonderful stories that everyone who knows her had, be it about raccoons, chipmunks, theatre, high school sports, gardening, work…there are so many! Remember her with a smile and a laugh as that is what Mamoo would want you to do. A Celebration of Life service will be held on December 29th, 2022 from 2-5pm at the Middleton Funeral Home.
