Jane Scott Hanley MacGillivray 1940 2022

MacGillivray (Hanley) , Jane Scott, Antigonish
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of
our family matriarch Jane Scott (Hanley) MacGillivray, of Antigonish,
on August 30th, age 81.
Born in Charlottetown, PEI, she was a daughter of the late
Patrick. C. Hanley and Margaret Scott (Scotty) Hanley.
A natural athlete, she was prominent in Regional
Women’s Basketball as a player, coach, and
referee. A highlight of her playing career was as
a player/coach for the 1964 Eastern Canadian Champions, The
Scots.
Subsequently, Jane was selected as the Coach of the
Women’s Basketball Team at Mount Saint Bernard College
(St.F.X.). This led to her appointment as the first Director
of Athletics at Mount Saint Bernard College. For her pivotal
role in the development of women’s sports at St. Francis
Xavier University, she was inducted into the St.F.X. Sports Hall of
Fame in 2018.
Jane had banking in her blood. Following in the
footsteps of her father she went to work for CIBC, retiring after a
successful 32-year career. Still having a passion for
business she went on to work at Cameron’s Jewellery for
another 23 years where they became like family.
A believer in community, Jane served on many committees and
groups including the Naomi Society, St. Ninian’s Co-op
Board, and the Catholic Women’s League. She served
on the Board of St. Ninian’s Parish Council and was
appointed as the first President of the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home
Foundation.
Jane’s longest role in life was as
“den-mother” to the many students she met through her
athletic career and to those many students who were friends of her
sons whenever they brought them through the door. She was
always quick with a meal, a shoulder to cry on, and a safe place to
retreat whenever needed.
She is survived by her loving son, David Philip MacGillivray,
Bedford, grandsons, William Patrick
Callum and Liam Connell and their mother Karen MacNeil.
Also, siblings Patricia (Andrew) Thomson, Bayfield, N and Raymond
(Joy) Hanley, Georgeville; nephews and nieces Paul Thomson, Bedford,
Leigh-Ann (Thomson) Balcom, Antigonish, Ryan Hanley, Calgary, Andrew
Hanley, Calgary, Michael Hanley, Antigonish and her CND
“family” especially Sister Anne Gillis, Charlottetown and
Sister Ann Marie Conn, Halifax.
She was predeceased by her parents Patrick C. and Margaret
(Scott) Hanley, and son Brian John MacGillivray (2020).
Jane and the family want to extend a special thank you to
those physicians, their teams and support staff that cared for her
over these last number of years. Especially, Dr. Furhmann,
Dr. MacCormick, Dr. Gillis, and Dr. Rice. We also wish to
thank the Palliative Care Nurses and staff, the Palliative Care Music
Therapy Program, the VON, and Continuing Care for making her final
days so peaceful. We will be forever in your debt.
Her son, David, would like to express personal thanks to Dr. Jeannie
MacGillivray whose hospitality allowed him to spend so many of the
last weeks by his mother’s side.
Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College
Street, Antigonish from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm on Thursday, September
1st. Funeral Mass will be in St. Ninian Cathedral on Friday,
September 2nd at 2:00 pm with Father Donald MacGillivray
presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers please send donations to the St.
Martha’s Palliative Care Society or the Palliative Care
Music Therapy Program care of the St. Martha’s Regional
Hospital Foundation. Online condolences:
